The Reward

By Joseph Logsdon

Tom hated his boss, so he decided to have an affair with his wife. She was an attractive woman, after all, and like most attractive women, she loved to get naked. Tom didn’t love her, but, then again, she didn’t love him. They loved fucking, that was all. Sex was sex, there was nothing special about it.

Looking out the window, Tom sighed as she kissed his neck. It was all very pleasant, or so it seemed. It was a sunny afternoon, though it would soon be night. In all his life, Tom had never felt so alive. Sex is like a fine wine, some say. The more you do it, the better the outcome. Though some would call it tacky, the bedroom was nice and warm. Her body was also very warm, a fact that made him tremble with excitement.

“Oh, baby, that feels good,” she muttered.

“Lois, you’re too much,” Tom sighed.

“What do you mean?”

“At the rate we’re going, I won’t last much longer,” Tom laughed.

“Why? Am I too hot to handle?”

“You could say that, I guess,” Tom replied.

“Well, just so you know, Bob will be coming home soon,” she stated.

“When?”

“Any minute, I think. Normally, I’d ask you to leave, but he’s expecting you here, isn’t he? If I recall correctly, he wants you to go on a camping trip with him. He’s been planning it for months, and I’m sure he’ll be glad to see you. I know I am,” she hissed, licking his neck.

“Do you think he suspects us?”

“Why should he?”

“I don’t know, I just have this feeling,” Tom stuttered.

“You seem nervous, what’s wrong?”

“What if he’s going to kill me?”

“Don’t be ridiculous, he only wants to spend time with you. Not only are you his best employee, you’re also his best friend. I know he can be mean, cruel even. He’s got a temper, make no mistake about that. I love him, I just can’t live with him. I’d do anything to get away, if only I could,” she cried.

“I had no idea,” Tom stated.

“It’s not your concern, it’s mine. He’ll be here soon; you should get ready,” Lois sighed, rising from the bed.

“Are you going to be okay?”

“The real question is, are you?”

“What do you mean?”

“Now that I think about it, he might suspect something. The other night, he was in a terrible mood. He kept cursing, almost to the point of exhaustion. It was a scary thing to watch, let me tell you,” she stated.

“Well, even if he does suspect something, what can he do?”

“He can do plenty, I assure you,” she replied.

“I can handle myself,” Tom stated, leaving the room.

Later that night, Tom joined his boss in the driveway. They were going away for the weekend, or so it seemed. Sitting in the passenger seat, Tom sighed as the car left the driveway. It was a tense moment, to say the least. Surrounded by darkness, they drove off into the night, unaware of their final destination.

“Where are we going?”

“I don’t know, I thought we’d wing it,” Bob answered, smoking a cigarette.

“Just out of curiosity, why are we taking this trip at night?”

“It’s more fun, don’t you think?”

“I guess,” Tom replied.

“Tom, you’ve been my best employee for many years, so I’ve decided to reward you,” Bob stated.

“How?”

“I can’t tell you, it’s a surprise,” Bob answered, turning the car left.

“What road are we on?”

“Don’t worry about that, okay?”

“You’re acting awfully strange, I must say,” Tom stated.

“Am I? Well, when you’re excited, you do a lot of crazy things, if you know what I mean,” Bob laughed.

“Yeah, I guess you do,” Tom replied.

“By the way, how’s Lois?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I’ve been really busy lately, so I really haven’t had the time to talk to her. She likes you, that’s for sure. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were fucking her behind my back,” Bob grunted.

“Are you accusing me of something?”

“Of course not, I know you’re a better man than that. Still, you must admit, she’s an attractive lady, isn’t she? With me being old and all, I never thought she would settle for a guy like me. That just goes to show you, looks aren’t everything,” Bob laughed.

“Yeah, you’re right,” Tom replied.

“Can I trust you, Tom?”

“Do you have to ask?”

“I’ve trusted very few men in my life, and for a very good reason. At some point, all of them betray me. Some of them were after my money, while others were after something far more precious. Many men have slept with my wife, but none of them live to tell the tale,” Bob grunted.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know,” Tom stated.

“I’ll ask you again, can I trust you?”

“Yes,” Tom answered.

Without warning, the car started to slow down. Bob reached into his pocket, implying that he was carrying a weapon. Despite his best efforts, Tom couldn’t keep himself from sweating. Pulling over to the side of the road, Bob stopped the car. Tom was on his own, with no one to help him. Bob knew his secret, there was no denying that.

“Why have we stopped?”

“Engine trouble,” Bob answered.

“Do you want me to take a look?”

“First, I want to give you something, then you can check the engine, okay?”

“Sure,” Tom stuttered.

“Are you nervous?”

“Yes,” Tom answered.

“Don’t be, you’re going to get your reward,” Bob stated.

“Bob, don’t do this,” Tom begged.

“Do what?”

“You know what I mean,” Tom stuttered.

“Calm down, it’ll be over soon,” Bob laughed.

Reaching into his pocket, Bob pulled out a wad of cash. It was surprising, to say the least. He handed the cash to Tom, who sighed in relief as he put the money in his pocket.

“Uh, thank you, I appreciate this,” Tom stated.

“Don’t mention it, you deserve it. I’ve been wanting to give you a raise for a long time, I just never got around to doing it,” Bob stated.

“This is very touching,” Tom stated.

“Hey, what are friends for?”

“Well, I guess I’ll check the engine,” Tom stated, getting out of the car.

“Be careful,” Bob replied.

Making his way to the front of the car, Tom felt relieved. Everything was going his way, or so it seemed. Before he could look at the engine, the car suddenly started. Having no time to react, Tom screamed as the car impacted his body. Within seconds of being hit, he was dead. Getting out of the car, Bob stood over his body, laughing uncontrollably.

“Poor Tom, didn’t even see it coming,” Bob laughed.

The End
