The Unlocked Door

By Joseph Logsdon

She was married to another man, but that didn’t seem to matter. One way or another, Kevin would have her for himself. The way he saw it, there was no other man for her. In all his life, he had never been so captivated. What had she done to him? He wanted to stay loyal to his boss, and he would’ve, if it hadn’t been for her. Only one question remained; what would be his next move?

He stood in the living room, waiting for her to arrive. He was willing to wait forever, because she was just that important. She was everything he wanted, and everything he didn’t have. Everything about her, from the way she moved, to the way she walked, to the way she talked, along with everything else, made him feel alive. She was, to put it mildly, the perfect woman. What she didn’t have, she could easily get.

Entering the room, she instantly captivated him. He took off her jacket, placing it on the sofa. They were alone, as far as they could tell. She looked into his eyes, eager to seduce him. Little did she know, he had already been seduced. He would do anything for her, no matter what the request.

“Has my husband come home?”

“He’s gone out, won’t be back till later,” Kevin answered, placing his hand on her arm.

“That’s good, because I have something to tell you,” she stated.

“I’m all ears,” Kevin stated, licking her neck.

“We can’t do this anymore, it just isn’t right,” she gasped.

Kevin froze, not knowing what to say. He tried to listen to her, but his mind was somewhere else. His greatest fear had come true, leaving him speechless. His heart skipped a beat, sending his mind into overdrive.

“Are you listening to me?”

“Yes, no, I don’t know. I love you, that’s all I’ve ever been sure of. You must understand, if you leave me, I’ll kill myself. I’ll get the gun from the basement, fill it with bullets, and then I’ll pull the trigger. Do you like the sound of that?”

“Could it be, that you’re jealous?”

“Of course I’m jealous, I’ve always been jealous. You must have realized by now, he’s not a good man. It doesn’t matter if you end it, he’ll still find out. He won’t stop until we’re dead, until we’re rotting in our graves. You want out of here, you got one way,” he stated.

“What way is that?”

“I’ll kill him for you,” he answered.

“Are you crazy? The minute he sees you, he’ll wipe you off the map. I got a better idea, we’ll run, catch a boat, and leave this fucking nightmare behind. I implore you, it’s the only way,” she stated.

“I know him, he’d follow us. He’d always be there, looking over our shoulders, just one step behind. As long as he’s breathing, we’ll never be truly safe. Marlena, I know this sounds dangerous, because it is dangerous. We could die, doing what we’re going to do. I’m willing to risk it, assuming you will,” he stated.

“I’ll risk it, just don’t involve me. I’ll go back to my room, and wait till it’s over. It will be over soon, won’t it? It should be a quick, no pain kind of murder. He deserves more pain than most people, I’d imagine. We need to be better than him, to prove that we’re not like him. He’s a monster, I’ll give you that, but we can’t sink to his level,” she stated.

“I agree, it wouldn’t be right. It’ll be quick, so long as I have my knife. He’ll be home soon, and if I know him as well as I should, he’ll want to go to bed. All I have to do is unlock the door, sneak into his bedroom, and knife him. He won’t feel a thing, you have my word,” Kevin stated.

“Enough details, you’ve already said too much. Has it ever occurred to you, that he might have cameras listening? He could be watching us right now, and in that case, we’re already dead. The next time you open your mouth, make sure no one can hear you. Even now, I can sense him looking at us, watching us, waiting for us to strike. Oh, God, why did I ever agree to do this? He’ll kill us, throw us in the river, without even blinking twice. We’re dead, I tell you! Dead!”

“Calm down, you’re acting like a child. We’ll be fine, as long as we stick to the plan. Now, go to your room, and whatever you do, don’t come out. I’ll come for you, when the time is right,” Kevin stated, leaving the room.

Marlena went to her room, uncertain of what was going to happen. What seemed like hours, was only a few minutes. Her husband had come home, unaware that he only had minutes to live. He went to his private bedroom, shutting the door behind him. She waited to hear something, but nothing could be heard.

A few minutes later, Marlena heard some kind of struggle. The sad thing was, she couldn’t tell who was winning. She heard her husband grunt, sounding as if he had been stabbed, but she couldn’t be sure. Kevin screamed, unable to cope with his pain. They were both hurt, that was a given. Aggravated by what she was hearing, Marlena thought about leaving, with the intention of never coming back. All of a sudden, the house was silent. The fight was over, but the real question was, who won?

Someone was heading towards the door, and whoever they were, they didn’t sound very happy. Blood seeped through the door, giving off an awful odor. She heard a footstep, then another footstep, and with every vibration, she became more frightened.

“Who is it? Kevin, is that you? I hope you’re okay, I was worried about you. I’m warning you, don’t try to scare me. I’m a grown woman, not some kid. Answer me, God damn you!”

There was no answer, only the sound of the footsteps. Slowly but surely, the knob started to turn. Marlena swallowed her fear, preparing for whoever was on the other side of that door. The door opened, sending a breeze of cold air through the room. He walked in, bloodied and out of breath.

The End
