Spiritual awakening can only happen when there is total surrender. You have to come to the point where you realize that you are not as wise as you think you are. In normal circumstances, we usually see ourselves as the centre of the universe. We have our own standards by which we judge everything as we see fit. In order for you to move to a higher level of spirituality, we have to surrender to the fact that we don’t know much. It is an acceptance that requires courage to admit that what we know is not all there is to know. It is through this that we open ourselves to other possibilities.

In order to experience a true awakening, you have to undergo the painful process of surrender. It is true that our past can prevent us from coming to this point in time and we have a tendency to be guarded. There is the fear of the unknown where we are afraid to let go of what we know as true and take on a new level of thinking. Without embracing new truths, we cannot experience spiritual awakening. Just like in the natural world where learning a new skill involves a certain amount of risk taking, it is no different in the spiritual world.

Surrender is a key to being at peace in this world. When you experience surrender, you stop figuring things out and leave out things that you cannot change no matter what you do. You begin to realize that you do not have all the answers and you cannot resolve all the problems. This state of abandonment does not entail irresponsibility rather a careful selection of the things that you chose to handle every day. Once surrender is total, then the opportunity arises for you to experience a higher level of spirituality. That is one of the characteristics of true spiritual awakening.
