Oh it's the most wonderful time of the year, though probably not the one your thinking of.
Halloween has finally come once again.
A night where I can indulge my sinister side without fear of persecution.
A noise outside distracts me from my thoughts.
I leap out of bed and onto my crimson carpets.
The colour is comforting and it seems to give off its on warmth.
I look out of the window at implacable darkness.
The noise has stopped and there is no sign of any movement.
I decide it is nothing and return to my bed.
But all too soon I hear the noise, a small scratching just outside my window.
This is odd at the best of times but when you live twenty stories of the ground it highly irregular.
Cautiously I grab the pen on my bedside table and slowly yet menacingly advance towards the window.
It seems my menacing approach and the rather deadly pen were enough to deter whatever monstrous fiend was surely after me.
I retreat backwards, keeping an eye on the window.
But again only the darkness remains.
My thoughts turn to sleep and I crawl back into bed.
I soon start to drift off.
But just as I enter the world between wakefulness and sleep I hear the scratching again.
This time coming from beyond my open door.
" hello?"
I venture trying to determine who is out there.
The only response is the scratching noise again, only louder.
I try to see past the pool of light from my door, but it's far too dark.
The sound comes again, but this time at the foot of my bed, I recoil my feet immediately.
I hadn't seen anyone enter, but I was not about to get up and check what it was.
It was drawing closer.
Scratch
Scratch
Scratch
Still I couldn't see anything.
I throw up my arms in defence, blocking out the light momentarily, that is when I see them.
They are like the shadows of people who aren't there.
They surround me, now blocking the light entirely.
I only see darkness.
