A night at a hotel, soon turns in to a nightmare.

The crackling fire In front of me, warms my bones, and reminds me that I am indeed still alive.
It is a comforting whisper, promising everything will be ok.
But at the same time, it is a loud and bellowing voice shouting at the night.
Defying it.
Refusing to give in, to the enclosing darkness.
They are around me.
The crackling of the blaze, drowns out the growls and snarls of them around me.
I could almost forget they were there.
I know I have to move.
Time is gone.
My dagger would prove next to useles, for those I kill, a hundred more would replace them.
There has to be another way.
I look around.
The rock behind me offering little in the way of escape.
The trees around me are too high to climb, and covered in thick snow.
One of them gets too close to the fire, and yelps in pain.
Quickly retreating from this new and dangerous protector.
A clump of snow hurtles past me.
Then another.
Then another.
Soon they are landing around the fire.
I lunge forward to defend it, but I am too late.
My guardian is gone.
Silence reigns.
The crackle of the fire, gone.
The snarling and growling of them, gone.
Just silence.
Then from the darkness, a deep and low sound.
At first it sounds like they are growling again.
But this time is different.
They all start to join in, becoming a crescendo of terror.
And then I realise what the sound is.
