Dick and two others lodged in the woods before nightfall. Their small tent were up and ready for its occupants. There were only three of them. One stayed behind to get the food ready, while the other two went on a reconnaissance trip.

It started to get dark and the other two had not yet showed up.Dick stayed there at the tent with the torchlight in his hand. As soon as he heard movement, the torch would switch to that area.

An hour passed, and still the other two did not show up. Dick was now thinking, should he stay put or go out and try to see if he could find them.

Making up his mind, he decided to go at least a few hundred meters from the tent. Doing so,he found that the torch only lit up the path before him--and not at all brightly--like some other torches would.

At least, he told himself, he had light, and there were many more batteries inside the tent should the ones in the torch die out.

He stopped, switch off the torch, stooped down, and tried to see through the woods which were very thick. He saw nothing.

As he was going to switch the torch back on, he felt something wrapping itself around him, and soon he was on the ground writhing in terror when he realizes that it was a python.

The whiteness of its belly, and the black and yellow mixture of the skin was enough to verify that it was a python. It was about 3 meters long. Dick tried to wriggle himself out of its grip, but found that it was impossible, the way the snake had him wrapped up.

With the torch still in his right hand, he switched it on. In doing so, the snake suddenly let him loose, and slid away in the undergrowth. This is definitely not my night, he told himself, making his way back to the tent. Arriving there, he couldn't believe what he was seeing in the torch light. The tent was flattened, and still there were no sign of the other two. Setting the tent up again, he knocked up a brew, and fell asleep. Waking up, later, he found it was almost dawn, and the other two were fast asleep inside the tent.

The End.
