The guy didn't check my papers.

The small restaurant just off the main road was packed with people who had just come from their work. They wanted something tasty to eat. Afterchecking the menu, they ordered, and wited. Inside the kitchen I was trembling, for I had no idea what to cook. They had asked me if I could cook, and I told them yes.But I hadn't told them that I only did that for my mates back in the army. The menu was to be a French dish with the starter of mixed salad and soup, then the main dish of meat with potatoes and vegetables. I am afraid those people waiting for that meal are going to be disappointed when they see what I place before them. I opened the fridge to find it packed with nice luscious meat. Nothing like that is going to go in my pan today., I told myself. Soup, you can forget about that. The boss came in and was surprised that I had not started as yet. He began to get worried that the customers might be angry. ''Relax, '' I told him, ''everything is under control. Don't worry.''
I took a peep out into the eating area, and was really surprised to see so many people waiting for their dinner. The boss said, as he watched me, not pleased at all the way things were going, ''Being a cook in the army, you must have catered for many soldiers.''
I said, ''Me, I only knocked something quickly for the lads.''
'' Weren't you a chef then?''
''I helped the chef doing the washing up.''
''You're having me on!''
''No, that's true.'' I said. '' My mum and my wife are good cooks.''
His face turned a bit reddish. ''Are you going to start now?'' He asked.
I started slicing the bread. Into the sack I had brought with me, I took out some tins of beans in tomato sauce. I placed a big pot on the stove, and was ready for the customers.

The End.
