All That is Understood

I refuse to yield
That which is less
Than the tenderness
In all goodbye kisses,
And desire in return
Nothing else more
Than the faintest calm
In all things that wake:
The eyelash of morning,
Gently opening to first light—
Birds sitting perched, beneath
Quietly trembling leaves.
You are the fading breath,
The soft lips aquiver
With night’s last gasp;
And I, the longing tears
That hold onto tomorrow,
With all that is understood

Between lips and goodbye.
