General Zaroff is evil

Most of the time you need to get to know someone before you actually know them, you need more than a first impression, but sometimes all you need is a first impression. In the story: “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. Mr. Rainsford get’s trapped on a mysterious island with an evil killer named General Zaroff. Based on Zaroff’s actions, speech, thoughts, and other character’s reactions, it is easy to see that General Zaroff is evil.

First, Zaroff’s actions tell us that he is evil. He kept talking to Rainsford about an “animal” that does all of the stuff a human does. So I know he hunts people because rainsford says; “Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, What you speak of is Murder”(Connell 21). Here we can see that General Zaroff hunts people and calls it a sport, and this shows us his actions.

Second, Zaroff’s speech tells us that he is evil. General Zaroff thinks that it is okay for him to destroy the weak for his pleasure. He says;  “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and if need be, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure. I am strong. Why should I not use my gift” (Connell 21) Here we can see that he is evil because he wants pleasure from another person’s pain. Next we can see he is evil because of his speech.
Third, Zaroff’s thoughts tell us that he is evil. When Rainsford escaped him he was mad, Zaroff was hoping to kill him. “Two slight annoyances kept him from perfect enjoyment. One was the thought that it would be difficult to replace Ivan; the other was that his quarry had escaped him; of course the American hadn’t played the game-so thought the general as he tasted his after-dinner liqueur” (Connell 28). Here we can see that he only cares about replacing his servant, and having someone to do things for him. And the fact that Mr. Rainsford did not let Zaroff kill him. If you do not think that this is evil, you belong on the same island that Zaroff is on.
Lastly, other character’s reactions tell us that General Zaroff is evil. When Rainsford first found Zaroff’s house, The servant acted like he was scared or Zaroff. “The man’s only answer was to raise with his thumb the hammer of his revolver. Then Rainsford saw the man’s free hand  go to his forehead in a military salute, and he saw him click his heels together and stand at attention” (Connell 17). Here we can see that Zaroff is evil because when the general came around Ivan, he salutes and clicks his heels together, so nothing will happen to him. And it shows that he is kind of scared of him.

General Zaroff, from “The Most Dangerous Game” is clearly evil based on his actions, speech, thoughts, and other character’s reactions. General Zaroff murders people and calls it a sport. He tells Mr. Rainsford that weak people do not deserve to live, and that it is okay for strong people to kill the weak, so he kills “weak” people. When Ivan was at the door holding a gun to Mr. Rainsford, the general started to come downstairs and Ivan saluted and clicked his heels together.
