330 Jay Street Part 5

Meredith Parker walks into her neighborhood bar, orders a white wine and a shot of bourbon.  Max the bartender asks her how her day at school was and she all but explodes.  "I am infuriated by these inept police we have!" she says.  "I have four students from the same family who haven't been at school for the past two weeks.  Their phone is off, so I asked the police to do a home visit and wellness check.  The sergeant just got back to me today.  He said his officer spoke to the mother and she appears to be not in danger.  When he asked to see the children the mother told him they were in school.  If they were in school we wouldn't be doing a wellness check in the first place!  Then he tells me that without any more evidence he can't get a warrant to enter the property!  God I'm mad!  I got the students' address from their admission records, and have a half a mind to go down there myself.  Do you know where 330 Jay Street is?"

"I know where it is." Max answers.  "Trust me it is in a very bad neighborhood.  Its not a good idea to go down there alone at night, especially after you've been drinking.  One of my customers had a very bad experience in that building.  His name's Diego and he's the guy in the blue denim jacket sitting down at the other end of the bar.  You can ask him if you like."

So Meredith walks to the end of the bar and says "Hi.  I'm Meredith.  Are you Diego?"

"Yes, I am" Diego answers.  "What can I do for you?"

"I wonder if we could talk in private" Meredith replies.  "At a table in the back.  I know it sounds crazy but I need to ask you a few things about a building called 330 Jay Street."  I'm a teacher at PS/IS 136 and am concerned about some students who live there."

"We can talk in the back" Diego answers.  "I wasn't paying attention to the game anyway."  So they take their drinks and go to the back table.

"There are a total of four students who live in apartment #2A.  Their mother's name is Shaquanda Johnson.  They haven't been in school for over two weeks and their phone isn't working.  The police can't do anything without more evidence.  I wonder if you've been there recently." Meredith asks.

"I was just there a few days ago and met Shaquanda Johnson.  I work as an exterminator and had to spray her and all other apartments in the building.  God that building's a dump!  Anyway she cursed me and the building maintenence man out for waking her up at 10 o'clock in the morning.  She told us that if her 6 kids weren't at school they'd beat the shit out of us.  We did the job as fast as we could and got out of there.  The apartment was a mess with empty malt liquor bottles all over the place and clothes all over the floor.  But I didn't see any kids in the apartment while doing the job, nor any evidence of child abuse or neglect.  Do you have time for another drink?  Its on me."

"Of course" Meredith answers.  So Diego goes up to the bar and gets another pint of beer for himself and a glass of white wine for Meredith.  Upon returning Meredith asks him "Do you know anything else about that building?  Too much information is far better then too little."

"That building is horrible!" Diego says.  "I've been an exterminator for over 10 years and have never seen a worse group of tennents.  This one guy on the first floor drew a gun on me.  I'd be dead if it wasn't for my exterminators' uniform.  Then I got cursed out by Ms. Johnson.  Next the old lady who lives next to her started yelling and screaming, accusing us of stealing her Hello Kitty figurine.  The the two apartments on the third floor weren't much better, especially with the crackheads in #3B.  To add insult to injury the crazy old lady who lives next to Ms. Johnson filed a lawsuit against both my company and the buildings' managing agent.  She also said that I threatened her and took out an Order Of Protection against me.  Now I can't work in the area!  I'd like to help you more, but if I get within 200 feet of the building Mrs. Lifschultz will have me arrested.  I can give you my office's telephone number, though.  My boss Joe can put you in touch with a Mrs. Donovan who manages the property.  I wish I could be of more help, but can't risk getting arrested and possibly losing my job.  Whatever you do don't go to that building by yourself or at night!"

"You know, Diego" Meredith says "You've been a lot more helpful than the police!  Please give me that number.  Good luck!".  Meredith takes down Ace Exterminating's phone number then leaves.  Diego goes back to the bar for another beer.

Meanwhile back at 330 Jay Street Darryl Weisman from #1B leaves the building to go to work.  He discovers his tires had been slashed and starts yelling curses in the street.  After calming down he calls a cab, having no choice but to get to work.  Watching from her window Mrs. Lifschultz smiles to herself.......
