A cigarette is left lit in the grass. Its deep orange ember is still visible, burning away at the filter. It’s almost hidden in the gray light of a street lamp that spills across the dark green shadow of the grass. The smoke drifts outward and away, spiraling and swirling, bouncing across fluorescent light streaks and the damp lawn. Lying on my back, I can see all the randomly placed stars above us, but that’s not what I’m looking at. Behind us is the noise of a busy city road, taxi’s and bike’s and busy businessmen, even this late at night. But that’s not what I’m hearing.
I’m listening to the music crackle from her headphones like from a dusty old record player. She leans back on me, looking over the river as the black-purple sky barely hovering over the black buildings and randomly placed gold colored windows. Her head on my chest, I feel her let out a sigh, and I don’t even need to ask her why. I know exactly what she means.
