“IT”

 By Nash Michalski

My life was great until “it” happened.  I suppose I should tell you what “it” is.  Well, let’s get started off with something less complicated.  I’m a pop can; I’m made by a company called “Popa Flavor.”  I was the oldest of five.  You probably noticed I said “was.”  When I was young and unfilled, I had to watch my two sisters and two brothers get crushed and thrown into a trash can.  They weren’t even recycled.  The sick person that did this said they were misfits. I guess they don’t like misfits. I’m not bragging, but I was the perfect one.  That’s why I’m still here.

Okay, so now you know my background.  What you don’t know is that was not “it.” My real story starts now.  After I watched the terrible tragedy that happened to my siblings, I was packaged with my best pal Reggie.  We were in a pack of six. Why? I don’t know.  I didn’t really know any others in the pack, but they all seemed nice.  I guess the humans package us by flavor because all of us in the pack were the cherry flavored ones.  Maybe it’s just a coincidence; I don’t know.  Back to the point, they just loaded us into a big, dark, smelly truck and closed us in.  I’m happy I wasn’t claustrophobic because this can named Jerry was, and he was really fizzing up.  This was the start of “it.”

The humans unloaded us and put us onto shelves. Reggie and I were on the third row up.  We sat there and watched people go by, and then we went to sleep.  When we woke up some of the packages were missing!  A few hours later a tall, skinny man came up and grabbed us with his big, sweaty, smelly hands.  He used those opposable thumbs all the humans have.  The Next thing I knew, we were riding home with him.

He put us in a fridge, like the one I was in at the company.  About four hours later he took us out.  He was having a huge party.  I loved the music; I was having such a great time. That is until the worst part of “it” happened.  A wild party animal picked me up. He pulled my tab, and it felt like I just got punched.  I was so worried that I was fizzing like no pop can has fizzed before.  Then, he tipped me upside down, and my heart dropped. I think it went into his mouth. It felt like I was getting the life sucked out of me.  I thought I was done for, but when he was finished I felt alive, but lighter, more fragile, thin, and sick.  It was the worst feeling ever.

I thought about the bright side; it was all over!  That was only a thought though. I was thrown on the floor, helpless.  I was kicked, trampled, almost crushed. Then, I was kicked out in the cold.

So there I was, stranded on the sidewalk all alone.  That’s where you found me Doc.  Hey that reminds me, I forgot to say thanks.  I don’t know what would have happened to me next if it wasn’t for you.  So, can I go now Doc.?
