  • Benny Somerville, stood on the porch, of his childhood home. The view, was spectacular. The Appallachian mountains, stood majestically, towering like, a gentle giant, in front of Benny's house. The folk,in Benny's hollow like to call one of the mountains "sugar",after the Neil young song: "sugar mountain".At the base, of sugar mountain was a flat, grassy Field, used to hold the Autumn harvest fair. Benny, since childhood, had expierienced the array,of autumn delights, that brought back, if just for a day,a youthful rebirth. But for Benny, this would be his last. His mother, had passed away, and the family house, was tied, to a reverse mortgage. The family home, was no more.Benny's brother's and sisters had long flown away,to other parts of the United States. From the New York islands, to the Gulf stream waters, like the Woody Guthrie song, says. Benny's father, had been a coalminer,He had passed away from lung cancer, when Benny, was fifteen.Benny had done odd jobs throughout his life. From rural, letter carrier, to selling leather bibles, door to door.Benny was forty now.Jobs were getting harder to obtain, and keep. The hospital bills, from Benny's mother's, cancer battle, left him with one thousand dollars, to his name. The house, was being put up, for auction, the next day. Benny, was all alone, now.He had no wife, children, he had friends, but they had family obligations.No. Benny was on his own now.Benny grasped his black suitcase, containing some shirt's, socks, underwear, pants and a family, leather bible and prepared to take, one last stroll, on Sugar mountain. End of part 1.
