t was a cool summer night with a light breeze in the air.  Jason had been dating his beautiful girlfriend for about three years and two months and thought it was time to propose.  He made everything perfect and took her to their favorite spot, the skyline.  The lights across the river twinkled bright.  They were sitting in his car with the windows down and the seats back.  Holding her hand, he looked down and thought soon the shiny ring in his pocket will be placed on the finger in his hand.  He was extremely nervous but excited.  In his head he knew this was the moment they had both been waiting for.  He wondered if she knew what was about to happen.

“Melissa, you are the love of my life.  I loved you even before we started dating.  Since the first time I saw you I knew you were my girl.  You are perfect in every way possible.  I love everything about you.  The period of time we have been dating has been the happiest I have ever been in my life.  Nothing and no one can make me happier.  I have the most fun with you.  You always make me smile. You have the softest skin out of anybody I have every met that I love to rub my fingers across.  Your long dark curly hair is so silky and is beautiful against your pale skin.  You have the cutest little button nose. I love every single one of your freckles and love to count each one.  Your smile blows me away each time I see it.  It makes me fall in love with you over again each time.  Your laugh warms my heart each time I hear it, and I love to make you laugh especially when you’re sad.  You have the most amazing eyes I fall deep into every time I look into them.  I can stare deep into your eyes for hours and I just feel like I am pouring my love out to you through them.  I love every single one of your earrings and you know I love to play with them and bite on them.  Your body is the most perfect body I have ever seen, the body of a goddess.  Your height is so perfect for me; I love looking down at you and cuddling you up deep into me when I am hugging you.  I can lie in bed with you for hours just cuddling and talking, and not know where the day went.  We never run out of things to talk about.  You take such good care of me, and I love to talk care of you.  You are my little girl.  You are my baby.  Your kisses are so sweet. I love your hand in mine.  I don’t need anybody in my life except for you.  No one else matters.  You are all I need, you are all I have.  My life without you is nothing.  I want to be with you forever.  I want to make sure you are all mine until we are wrinkly and old.  I want to be able to kiss those soft lips whenever I want forever.  You are my dream girl.  You make my world complete.  You’re the reason I wake up in the morning.  Nothing makes sense without you.  I am so proud and lucky to call you mine.  You are more than I could ever ask for and I love you with all my heart.  Baby girl, will you marry me?”

Melissa shifts in her seat and puts her hair down covering her face, fidgeting with

her fingers in silence for a few moments.

Melissa: “Oh Jason…you know I love you.”

Jason is taken back and his face looks scared of what he will hear next.

Melissa: “Jason, I can’t accept this ring.  I’m so sorry baby I can’t say yes to you.”

Jason is stunned.

Jason: “I…I…uh…What? I thought this is what we both wanted.  I thought we wanted to be with each other always and forever…remember?”

Melissa: “Yes Jason, but-”

Jason: “I can’t believe this.  I am going to be sick.”

Jason opens his car door and pukes.  He then gets out of the car and begins to walk away.  Melissa opens her door and screams out,

Melissa: “Jason where are you going?” Baby please come back!”

Melissa jumps out of the car and runs after him.

Melissa: “Baby please stop. Where are you going?”

Jason yells,

Jason: “I am so embarrassed, so heartbroken!”

Melissa: “Jason please just listen to me! You didn’t let me finish speaking! Baby please come here calm down.”

Jason is pacing back and forth.  Melissa goes up to him and hugs him, calming him down.

Jason: “Baby what just happened?”

Melissa: “Listen baby, I love you with all my heart, you know that.  I do want to marry you baby, I do want to be with you forever and always. But you know my father is very sick.  I have to focus on him right now.  I have to be with him and take care of him.”

Jason looks a little relieved.

Jason: “So its not a complete no?”

Melissa: “It’s just a no for the moment.”

Jason: “Oh Melissa, why did you do that to me.  Are you sure? Why did you make it seem like you were going to deny me, and then break up with me? You know that I am a hundred percent all for you taking care of your father.  And I will be right by your side.  And whenever you are ready we can take the next step.”

They look off into the skyline distance, with his arm around her and her head in his chest.
