Mia wandered the dark trails in the jungles of Teer alone, dawn was approaching and having fed she searched for a cave to sleep the day away. Her green eyes saw every detail of the jungle as clearly as if it were broad daylight. Her sharp hearing detected the sound of a startled wild cat fleeing in the opposite direction. She didn't hesitate because she knew she had nothing to fear from the cat. She had nothing to fear from any animal in the jungle that she knew of. The only thing that made her hide was the Wicca with their magic and their traps. she, like them, had once been human, but a chance encounter outside her old village had changed her. Now she hardly remembered what it had been to be human, weak and afraid. She didn't miss the sunlight or the fires that had once been warmth and protection. She was strong now, she was something for the humans to fear. Even the powerful Wicca would not face her without their numbers and their magic spells. The Wicca were forever trying to capture her. She didn't know what they wanted with her but her every instinct screamed at her to avoid them. They were different from the other humans, they sought to change themselves with their rituals and potions. They fought against the laws of nature and refused to accept the flow of normalcy. To Mia, whose change had been against her will, they even smelled wrong. Mia didn't even know what she was, her faded human memories had never encountered one such as she. Even the legends of her people had never mentioned a beast like her. She remembered the wolf clearly, it had startled her at her edge of the jungle, and maybe had also been startled by her. It had looked at her for a long time before it attacked. Mia had been frozen in fear, the only sound she heard was the pounding of her heart. A scream gathered in her gut but it couldn't find a way out. when the wolf sprang Mia had fought madly for her life. she bit and clawed at it even as it bit and clawed at her. When she thought of this day, witch was rare, the metallic taste of blood came to her as if it was still in her mouth. the sweet musky smell of the wolf's fur filled her nose, even the searing pain of it's teeth tearing into her flesh returned. The only thing that stayed away was the sound, to her the attack had been silent, no screaming, no growling, no sound at all. The wolf had suddenly stopped. it stood over her, it's head cocked as if it saw something in her it hadn't seen before. then it had simply walked away, retreating in to the jungle and the dark corners of Mia's memories. Darkness had come and she lay in the dirt, her eyes focused on the moon. Fire burned her veins as the moonlight bathed her tattered body. Darkness spun at he edges of her world claiming her consciousness leaving only the white dot that was the moon. When she awoke it was days later and she found herself in a dark cave inside the jungle. She had been awakened by a hunger that seared in her belly. She had left the cave and using her new sharper senses she had captured a small deer. it didn't even seem strange to her to eat it raw like the other predators of the jungle. Mia snuck through the dark night to the edges of her village. She didn't need to get to close as she could now see and hear from great distances. She saw her family in a turmoil. her mother and sister sat embraced, crying. "Mia, Mia, where is my daughter!?" shouted her mother. Her father stood staring in to fire in stunned silence, unable to answer. Meno, her betrothed paced around the fire. "We searched every where, we couldn't find a trace of her"He said mostly to himself. Bindy, her sister only clutched at her mother saying nothing. She fought the impulse to call to them, to run to them and tell them she was alive, but her new instincts told her they were better off thinking her dead and devoured. After all it was not uncommon to lose children to the hungry wild beasts that roamed the jungle. Tears streamed down her face silently as she looked at Meno's sad face in the firelight. She could still see the picture of the wedding dress she had been making in her mind. Her gaze moved to Bindy, she knew that Bindy was dutiful and she would follow the customs of her people. She would replace Mia and wed Meno without question or complaint. Mia could feel the ache of her heart still back then, at that time she didn't know how completely those feeling would leave her in time. For several years after that night Mia kept silently around the edges of her village watching the inevitable going on of life. She had watched her sister marry Meno and kept a late night vigil at their hut for many nights. She knew before even Bindy did that she had news for Meno. " Husband, I have something to tell you." she had whispered in their bed one night. " I am with child, Meno, i hope it makes you happy because i have grown to love you and this is my gift to you. Meno had sat up in bed and looked at her in the dark "Are you sure? This is good news indeed" he squeezed her against him and said "I too have grown to love you even though I thought I would never love another after losing Mia." A small sob escaped Bindy's lips "I know she would be please to know we are happy, if the child is female we shall name her Mia to honor her spirit." And she was right, Mia was pleased and she finally realized that she did not belong there anymore. That night's revelations had brought her no pain, no longing for what might have been. She had bid them a silent goodbye and walked away into the jungle never looking back once. Now years later, Mia had staked out a large territory in the deepest part of the jungle. The people of her old village never dared wander that far into the jungle. Here she had lived in relative peace night after night, hunting and feeding. She slept in cave during the day only venturing out at night. In time her acute vision had become sensitive to the bright daylight. The only thing that could stir any emotion in her now was the hunt. She would walk through the jungle, her footfalls undetectable, her nostrils flared, taking in the smells of the jungle. All her senses focused on the hunt, her muscles tensed before springing on her prey. When she had the prey in her clutches she would press it against her. The blood in her mouth, the futile struggle as the heartbeat at first rapid then slowing to a stop drove her into a frenzy. Afterwards she would find the stream and drink her fill before washing the blood of her feast off her body. This night she had caught a small Kinaki deer early in the evening. when she had lapped at the cool clean water she had at first heard or maybe felt a distant chanting on the wind. Suddenly she felt a strange heat rising in her chest and dizziness began to invade her head. She clutched her head i seeming pain and with a snarl and a shake of her head she fought off and broke the attempted connection. The Wicca had been trying their spells i an attempt to capture her again. They had been trying to capture her ever since they had become aware of her presence in the jungle. Mia looked toward the north, she was weary of their attacks on her. She knew the time had come for her to fight them. She tossed her head back and with her eyes on the moon she let out a long howl before speeding off into the night after them. Gavil fell to the ground on his back when the connection had broken. The rejection had been so violent that the entire group had been pushed back a few steps. "Aaaargh!!!" Antha screamed in frustration. "We have failed again!!! I need her blood and heart to complete the amulet of power!!" She stomped her feet and glared angrily at the others in the group. She silently cursed them for their pathetic weakness. She felt they were not worthy of her leadership and knew she would destroy them all when she had her amulet of power. but for now se needed them to complete her plans. She looked at Gavil and felt that familiar stirring in her loin. she would keep him as her mate. She knew he had powers even he didn't know about. He pleased her eyes and she wanted him by her side when she ruled over the filthy humans. Gavil too was lost in his own thoughts. He admired and even feared Antha, but felt no stirrings when he looked at her. She was beautiful that was true her skin and hair were fair and flawless. she looked almost innocent until you looked into her icy blue eyes. For a long time, before the Wicca, Antha had used her beauty to her advantage among the common humans. She had lured the men into dark corners letting their clumsy hands awaken her excitement. And when they had reached their pinnacle she had spilled their blood on her naked body in her own sick climax. Then she had found the Wicca and they had helped her find power beyond the one she already had. but she wanted more, much much more. Gavil was the total opposite of Antha, he was dark and broodingly handsome. his dark brown eyes were kind and easily read. His face was kind and honest. He didn't know it but he had been born with the powers the Wicca had achieved trough their rituals and spells. He had been brought in by his mother after growing up hidden among his mother's normal family. She had brought him when he came of age never revealing that he was her son. Their closeness had made Antha think that they were mates and one night she had secretly poisoned her to clear the way for herself. He didn't know that his mother had been poisoned so he had stayed not knowing what else to do. Later that night as the Wicca walked towards the temple where they lived Mia followed in the shadows. She had easily found their scent in the wind and then their trail after she had located the clearing from witch they had attempted to capture her. Her senses were so strong that she had been able to tell each individual by their scent. She had detected that on one was different among them but at the moment her focus was ending their assaults. She caught up to them easily after that. They all wore Identical hooded robes and they walked silently single file. The one at the end fell slightly behind and Mia had him before anyone caught on. She donned his robe and fell in line leaving his lifeless body to the lesser beasts in the jungle. "Gavil, you will come to my chambers tonight." Antha ordered. "I am not ready" he replied "I have not completed the final induction ceremony yet." He had been purposely avoiding it to keep her at bay. "You will complete it tonight, I did not waste my powers eliminating your useless old mate to be made to wait any longer." she snapped at him with out thinking. "As you wish priestess" He replied bowing his head. She smiled smugly not seeing the flash of anger in his eyes. From the back of the line Mia absorbed all this. Her instincts told her that this was the one Wicca that was different. His scent stirred strange feelings of confusion in her. She began to tremble and sweat underneath the heavy robe. As Gavin fell in line behind Antha he felt the sensation of being watched. He turned around and caught a flash of green as the last in line lowered his head. He doubted that he had seen that, he couldn't believe that in light of what he had just found out that he would even be worrying about the last in line. He pushed it out of his mind and turned toward Antha's back again and lost himself in thoughts of revenge. At last they reached the temple and Antha watched Gavil as the last of the Wicca entered the temple. She smiled to herself as she locked the door and turned toward her chambers. Gavil paced inside his chambers, muttering to himself. He had changed into the usual garb, but had added a small dagger inside one of his boots. He tried to figure out a was to avoid the final induction ceremony. He knew now that he didn't want to be part of the Wicca. All he could think off was that he wanted to kill Antha and avenge his mother. He could feel his powers boiling beneath the surface, emerging out of his anger. Antha Smiled at her reflection in the mirror. She knew she was beautiful, she had known it from a young age. She had used it many times in her life to feed her sick desires. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she relived some of the bloody moments from her past in her mind. She closed her eyes as she brushed her hair picturing the pleasure Gavil would bring her soon. Meanwhile Mia had crept through the temple killing all that she found, hiding their bodies to avoid discovery. They seemed to be preparing for something. She had found their inner chamber and had studied the strange things they had laid at their alter. She looked up and there was a statue of a large winged thing. It had claws at its feet and a long reptilian tail. This was what they thought was their dark lord. Mia knew that it didn't exist, it was simply a figment of their twisted imagination, a scapegoat for their evil actions. They were such fools, nature was full of spirits worth praying to. But the Wicca chose to ignore them. All things in the world that wanted more than what was for them eventually paid for it and tonight was the night for the Wicca. When Gavil left his chambers he felt an eerie emptiness in the temple. He wandered around and found not a soul, not even in the altar room. He decided to go to Anthas chambers and pretend to have been inducted. He would kill her before she discovered otherwise. Antha opened the door to her chamber when he knocked. She was dressed in a sheer robe sprinkled with tiny crystals that sparkled in the candlelight. He entered and she quickly pressed herself against him. She pushed him toward her bed and covered his lips with hers. She backed away sightly when she realized that he did not respond. A flash of surprise flicked across her face as she saw him reach for his boot. before she could process the thought a low throaty snarl startled them. They both turned toward a dark corner and Mia emerged fro the shadows. Gavil could not believe his eyes. He could see that she was not human. To his eyes her beauty was hypnotic. Her green eyes flashed with intelligent fierceness. She was small but he could see her muscles were taut and ready to spring. Her hair was shaggy and silvery gray and she wore the tattered remains of a peasant girl's dress. She snarled at them revealing sharp teeth that would have stopped anyone cold in their tracks. His stomach did flip flops as his heart raced in his chest. "Well, well, if it isn't the jungle beast. Here i've been trying to capture you all these years and in the end you came to me all on your own." Antha hissed. "I shall have my powers after all tonight." " You will die tonight." Mia said quietly in a voice that was deep and not used to being used. " Don't underestimate my power, Beast" Antha said. " I have killed all your followers." Mia snarled. A look of surprise flitted briefly across Antha's face. "You did me a favor, they were all going to die anyway" she told Mia " I don't need them now that you are here. She reached for Mia squeezing the air a look of concentration on her face. Mia twisted in pain a look of disbelief on her face as an unseen force squeezed her heart. She flew backwards and crashed into the wall landing on her knees gasping for breath. Antha laughed."Kill it Gavil!" she commanded. He couldn't take his eyes of the scene before him."Quit staring at it!! Kill it so we can start our reign of power!" Antha shouted. Gavil tore his eyes off of Mia and turned to Antha, his eyes burned with anger and hate. his hidden powers broke the surface in his rage and Antha could only stare in wide eyed shock as she felt invisible hands crush her throat. she rose in the air, clawing at her neck kicking the air. " That woman you eliminated, Antha, was my mother. You will pay for what you did to her." Gavil shouted. Antha began to shake and bloody spittle began to drain from her mouth. Her hands fell away from her neck and she began convulsing in mid air. She fell to the ground, her eyes open but seeing nothing. Gavil turned away from her and ran to Mia who lay in a heap on the floor. "Come I will help you." he said to her as he helped her to her feet. "I must kill you" she whispered "You are one of them." "No,I am not one of them" he answered" they are no more, you saw to that." He reached out to her and softly stroked her cheek. He looked into her surprised eyes and saw the confusion she felt. She fought the urge to lean into his hands to lose herself in his odd scent. She bit his hand as it neared her mouth and fled the room before he could speak again. She could hear him following her through the halls until she found the door and with out looking back she disappeared into the jungle. Gavil watched her longingly from the temple door, holding his bleeding hand against him. He wanted to run after her, chase her to the ends of Teer if need be, but he knew he had other things to do first. He could feel a burning in his hand as he lit fire to the temple. As if the fire came from his hand directly. He turned his back on the burning temple and walked into the jungle. He could already feel his body and his senses changing as he broke into a run. He caught Mia's scent in the wind and followed her into the night.
