Jesslyn is being told a big seceret about her family but... it's not what she hoped for

We walk up the stairs of the apartment; there was mold, dead rats, and other gross things I’d rather not say. It hasn’t changed a bit since I was last here. I touch the crumbling walls, the faded white paint sticks to my finger; I brush them off on Blake’s leather jacket.

“Thanks,” he says under his breath.

“Yeah, no problem,” I reply not really caring, he is oblivious to me. All I am thinking of are all the childish memories of this apartment building: the dog we used to play with; my fist kiss with Blake, and when my parents got in a fight I ran away to here.

“Hey.” Someone calls snapping me out of my daze. It’s Mark. “Did you miss me?”

“No…” I say frankly. “Can you tell me why I’m here now?”

“Fine, come on up,” Mark say gesturing for me to come up. Worst part about Blake’s apartment is it’s on the top floor. I drag myself up and I mentally collapse on the floor. Ten stories high, Blake could carry me to the car but not up the million steps.

“Okay, where do we begin?” Mark mumbles, plopping on a red couch, making stuffing ooze out of it and dust fly out of it. “Well I guess we should say, an evil spirit, demon thing is out to get you for some odd reason.” I start picking at my nails.

“Well something around those lines,” Blake adds. “You see, your brother and I are demon hunters and this is a really badass…” he stops. “Are you listening?”

“No, I stopped the moment you said ‘demon’,” I say truthfully. “I don’t believe in demons, they are something moms say to scare little kids to get them to be good or whatever.”

“We aren’t lying!” my brother rises from his seat.

“Prove it,” I shot at him. “Prove to my you are a demon hunter.”

“Okay,” Blake and my brother say at the same time. “But,” Blake begins. “You swear you won’t run off?”

“Cross my heart and hope to die,” I say in light fluttery voice.

Blake closes his eyes and starts to chant unfamiliar words. I watch carefully as his skin begins to glow. No. More like something is forming around him like reddish black flames, but there so faint I don’t really believe my eyes. As though there was a balloon over his head his hair began to rise, like static was lifting it up. His eyes snap open, they blaze a bright crimson.

I scream at the top of my lungs. I feel tears run down my face; I cover my mouth to keep me from making anymore noises. I back away from the now normal looking Blake. This is not my best friend; this is a monster who I never want to see again.

“Jesslyn!” my brother calls in my ear. I cover my face with my hands. “It’s okay, we won’t hurt you.” He wraps his arms around me, holding my tight agents his chest. He used to do this when our dad yelled at me for screwing up.

“What was that?” I sniffle; I clung onto his plaid shirt. He flinched a little when my nails skimmed his cheats.

“That is a demon hunter.” I look up at him, his mind in a different world. “I wouldn’t lie to you.”

“Please, you lie all the time.”

“About something that important,” he adds. He runs his hand down my hair. He bends down and whispers in my ear: “Blake needs you.”

I gingerly shove away from Mark, I turn slowly; Blake was standing at the window, his hands gripping on to the top ledge or the window pane. I gradually make my way over to him, he wasn’t in his leather jacket, and he’s only in his mussel shirt. His back is tense; I don’t know what to do. I sneak a glance under his arm to see he’s in another world.

“Blake?” I murmur. “Wake up.”

“What?” his head twist down to look at me. He looks like someone just ripped out his heart and spit on it. His body swivels so he’s facing me. His arms fall limply by his sides and his face crumples with spite. “Are you gunna scream again? God, if that scares you, I wonder what would happen if the monster under your bed came out.”

I cross my arms and glare up at him, his cocky smirk mocks me. “You know I scare easy.”

He snorts, “yeah, but come on, when we where eight, you wouldn’t sit on Santa’s lap ‘cause you where scared he would eat you.”

“I remember that!” Mark chimes in. “Man you bawled like a baby; and clung to my leg for dear life!”

“Are you still scared of the Easter Bunny?” Blake asks. I just stare blankly in to space as they pick on me about my childhood fears. Blake might be a demon hunter but he’s still an ass trench. As he and my brother ROFL I flip through one of his car magazines.

“Are you done talking about me?” I snap flinging the magazine across the room.

“We can help it my love,” Blake begins, pinching my chin between hit thumb and index finger. “You are just too cute.” He lifts my head up and pecks me on the lips; he rests his forehead on mine. I feel my cheeks heat up.

“Are you still frightened of me?” he asks. For the longest time we just gaze into each other eyes, no matter how hard I try I’ll never be afraid of him.

DOnt you DARE kiss him! the voice hisses in my head but i ignore it, he's not one of us! Jesslyn dont!

I shift my head so our lips meat again, but only this time it’s not a peck like I anticipated. He pries open my mouth with his, and he slips his tongue into my mouth. I shove him away but he laces his arms around my waist and pulls me closer and deepens our kiss. Giving up I rope my arms around his neck, pulling him closer. His tongue explores my mouth, and I explore his.

He pulls away and my stomach knots up; the only thing running through my mind is: Oh My God I just kissed Blake. It’s not like we never kissed before, just not with tongue… I swallow what I take to be my abdomen, since I ate nothing to throw up.

He plops next to me; he stares straight ahead as though he hasn’t a clue on what he will do next. I pick at my nails like I always do when I’m nervous, I keep glancing over at him but he never even looks at me. I guess he’s in another world again.

I rest my head on his shoulder, and sigh deeply and a little over dramatically. Mark wasn’t here so he must have left so Blake and I could… talk… Well it was a very productive talk if you ask me.

“Hey,” Blake mumbles, his head falling onto mine. “Sorry,” I could tell by the hint of amusement in his voice he was definitely not sorry. His hand squeezes my shoulder, as he draws me closer to him.

“Yeah.” I roll my eyes and snuggle up next to him, he flips on the T.V. and channel surfs. I gnaw on my lip fighting the edge to ask him questions on being a Demon Hunter.

“Your body is tense,” he comments. “Whatever you want to say, say it.”

“No there’s nothing,” I reply.

“You’re lying.” He constricts his grip around me.

“Fine,” I mutter. “I want to know more about you and your demon hunting stuff.”Also why id there a voice in my head?I pull a black hair tie off of Blake’s wrist, and pull my hair in to a pony tail. I tear myself from his grasp. I pull one of the throw pillows on to my lap and gaze at him.

“It’s been five minutes, when are you going to ask?” he snaps after a while.

“Okay, first, how did you become a Demon hunter?”

“Born one.”

“What can you do?”

“Hunt demons.”

“You aren’t going to take me seriously…” I chuck my pillow at him. “I’ll ask one more question and I’ll be done. Answer it seriously.”

“I’ll do my best.” He observes the dust infested pillow.

“Why did you say ‘before it’s too late’?”

He absentmindedly gazes at me, his eyes in another world. I groan, he’s such a moron, like he didn’t even hear me. Jerk. He says he’ll take me seriously but then he doesn’t even listen. I don’t know why I even bother with him.

“Demons…” he moans. “Demons want you…” he gingerly brushes his delicate fingers a cross my cheek.

His listened to me.

I want you more then them! the voice snaps.

Ignoring....

“They want you, I can’t let them take you,” he raves on and on about how demons want me. He hisses words under his breath.

“Blake!” I flick his forehead and he snaps out of his world. “Why do demons want me?”

“I don’t know. I just noticed that they were surrounding you when we were in sixth grade. I was curious so I decided I would talk to you.”

“So you only talked to me because there were demons around me?” I cry.

“Well at lest you know we have a hell of a friendship.” He plays with my hair as he tries not to smile.

“Ha… ha… very funny.”

“Really you get it?” he beams up at me. “Since demons come from hell…” he trails off. “What?” he says, noticing my glare, he looks pretty dumbstruck.

“I can’t believe you only talked to me because I had a demon or two hanging around me.” I can feel my face turn red out of spite.

“It was more like twelve.”

“Twelve!” Oh my god!

“Since we started hanging out they vanished but, there back…” he frowns one of the ‘oops’ frowns. “But I’ll protect you.”

“Oh jeez, you make me feel so safe.” I stand up and walk around the insignificant space. I gaze at him, his long legs crossed on the coffee table, and his hands twined behind his neck.

“Any other questions?” He closes his eyes and yawns.

“How come I’m not a demon hunter?” I sit on the floor cross legged. His eyes snaps open and he sits up straight.

“That’s a very good question,” he gets up and paces around deep in thought. He mumbles to himself. “I got it!” he snaps his fingers and squats in front of me. “Since you’re not a demon hunter, and you should be, demons want you!”

“OMG!” I squeal. “That didn’t answer my question!” I sigh and stand up; Blake mimics my action and wraps me in his arms. His breath was cool in my ear and gave me goose bumps up my spine. He’s breathing was so steady I think he’s sleeping.

“Are you done yet?” the voice of Mark groans.

“Shit.” Blake hisses in my ear and releases me. “We think the demons are after her because she is supposed to be a demon hunter but she isn’t.”

“Well duh,” Mark laughs. “You see…” they continue their conversation and I zone out. I’m so confused. If I’m supposed to be a demon hunter but I’m not, what am I?

“Jess, I’ll take you home,” Mark says cutting me short of my thoughts. I look up at him, for some reason he looks like he’s in distress. “Will have to tell them soon or later what I am…”

“Yeah… You tell dad, he’ll freak out and send you to the insane asylum.” I pat him on the back. “Good luck.”

“Good point.” He scratches his five o’clock shadow.

“I wouldn’t tell them,” I murmur. I run my hand threw my hair. Ew it’s greasy! I yawn loudly.

I’ll get you soon. I blink. Who was that? I glance over at Blake. He didn’t seem to hear anything, same thing with Mark. I shake my head; it was all in the noggin. I sigh and head towards the door.

“Mark. Can you take me home?” I don’t wait for answer, I just move on. What can I possibly be… and who the hell will ‘get me soon’ maybe I’m hallucinating? I pat my face a few times. “Wake up.”

“Got a problem there?” Mark inquires. “Or is there a giant spider on your face?”

“How come I’m not a Demon hunter?” I open the door to his old mustang; weird how I didn’t see this when I got here.

“Because you special,” he says. “So, is he a good kisser?”

“Who?” I ask, feeling my face heat up. He saw that? Jesus… I feel violated now. Why was he spying on us? Man, my brother’s a stalker… I feel so flattered.

“Don’t play dumb, Blake.” He shoves my arm playfully, and winks. “’Cause, if he’s good then I’ll have to get the shot gun out.”

“Oh in that case, he’s amazing. Best I ever had.” Technically he was the only I ever had but still.

“Kewl…” he mumbles bluntly. He starts grumbling stuff under his breath. I grin.
