“Who are you?”

“You know me.”

“No, I don’t.”

“Don’t you remember me? You said you would show me your world.”

“No, I... Wait. Maybe I do remember you. But.... no.”

“Please. Try and remember.”

“I... I think I do. You climbed up through the mirror-”

“Yes! This very mirror!”

“But... that was when I was a child.

“I don’t know what you mean. Why can’t you remember? What’s wrong with you? You look the same... but different.”

“Nothing is wrong with me. I am just old. An old man.”

“I don’t understand.”

“You came so long ago.”

“Not for me. For me it was... Not long. Not short. But you said you would never forget.  You said you would wait for me. ”

“I did. Every day for weeks, months, almost years, I would go to the mirror and wait for you.”

“But... why did you stop? Why did you give up on me?”

“Why did I give up on you? You were the one that left and never came back! You were the one that abandoned me!”

“I did come back. I am here now, aren’t I?”

“Yes, more than 70 years later!”

“Why are you obsessed with time? Time is nothing.”

“Time is everything!”

“Not for me.”

“We live in different worlds.”

“You said you would show me your world.”

“I would have. If you had returned.”

“I have returned. I am here... Wait, stop! Are you sick? Your eyes... they....”

“They are only tears.”

“Tears... Why?”

“You have not aged a bit.”

“Age... I do not understand.”

“I never got married.”

“Married... you never had a Partner-For-Life?”

“No. Did you? Do you?”

“You said you would wait.”

“I did, for a time.”

“I missed you.”

“I missed you too. When you didn't come back, I was scared, and then I became angry.”

“And now?”

“Just hurting inside.”

“Did I cause you much pain?”

“Not much. Not much.”

“And yet your cheeks are wet.”

“That they are.”

“I am sorry.”

“It is not your fault. You do not understand time.”

“I do... A bit. It is painful, I know.  But that is all.”

“Not just painful. Joyful, as well. But over time... people change.”

“Did you?”

“Yes. Yes, I believe I did.”

“I still love you.”

“It seems love does not care about time.”

“You didn't wait for me.”

“Because love had given up.”

“But you didn't have a Partner-For-Life.”

“Maybe love was scared.”

“Of me?”

“Of being hurt again.”

“Again?”

“Time hurts.”

“So do I. Did I cause the tears?”

“In a way, maybe.”

“We still have time to do all the things we wanted too.”

“Like fly to space?”

“And walk on the moon.”

“And dance under the stars.”

“And see kangaroos.”

“And tigers!”

“Of course, tigers!”

“And.... no. I should stop. I am too old to have childhood dreams.”

“Is that what I am? A childhood dream?”

“It would be simpler if that is all you were.”

“But I am not.”

“No. No, you are not.”

“If not a childhood dream, what am I?”

“A... An Always Dream. An Always Dream that gives up, but never stops hoping.”

“I like that.”

“So do I.”

“I didn't know... About time.”

“No. No, of course not.”

“But... we can still be Partners-For-Life. Like we always wanted to.”

“No. It is too late for that.”

“But-”

“I don’t have much time. I don’t want to hurt you.”

“What if I don’t mind being hurt? What if it is worth it?”

“It isn't.”

“Do you regret meeting me?”

“No. No. Never. I loved you.”

“Loved?”

“Love.”

“Then why....”

“Because I love you and don’t want to hurt you.”

“Please. Don’t push me away.”

“I... I have to. It’s been too long.”

“No! I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I’m sorry-”

“Stop crying. Please, stop crying.”

“But why does time matter?”

“It doesn't. Not really. Not to you, not to love.”

“Then why?”

“Because it matters on earth.”

“Let me take you with me! We can escape time!”

“No! My time is now. I cannot run from death!”

“Death? What is Death?”

“Time brings Death.”

“But what is it?”

“It is the end. It is peace and rest and calm, for those it takes, but for those left behind it is pain and grief and hurt.”

“And that is why?”

“That is why.”

“Does Love care about death?”

“No. No, never.”

“Then I don’t either.”

“It doesn’t work like that.”

“I know.”

“I’ll miss you.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“Always?”

“And forever.”
