The truck roared noisily down the dirt road, music blaring. Inside the cab, the two sat silently, both tapping along to the beat. It was some loud song about sex and partying. Not very conducive to the mood, but it seemed appropriate for their weekends. After a minute, she felt his hand slip into hers and she turned and smiled at him. He smiled a little back, then pulled her over into the middle seat, and she tucked her shoulder between his and the seat, resting her head there.
They drove up north for an hour in silence, just leaning into each other. He loved the feeling of her pressing into him. She was warm and soft and smelled like vanilla. It had been a long time since he had been able to spend this much time with her, and it was nice. She had always made him feel needed and important.
Where is she?!” he was frantic. The summer they had been eighteen, her boyfriend of three years had been killed in a hit and run with a drunk driver. She had ran from the room and disappeared for the rest of the day. Everyone had been looking for her. He had been gone for the day chopping wood, and when he got back to camp, they all told him what was going on. He had searched the camp for her, before realizing there was one place she would be.
The work crew cabin from the first summer. It wasnt in use anymore, but all of her favorite memoried had taken place there. He approached the door and called her name softly. After a moment she opened the door to the cabin. He tilted her chin up.
“Are you ok?” her face dropped, but not before he saw her eyes fill with tears. “Come here.” he had picked her up, and she had clung to him, drawing on all of his strength. They had hugged in silence for ever it had seemed.
The next morning she had been gone.
“What is it sweetie?” she turned down the music and turned to him. He suddenly realized that his grip on her leg had tightened.
“Sorry, did i hurt you?” she shook her head, pushing the curls away from her face.
“What were you thinking about?” her dark eyes were worried, and she touched the side of his face lightly.
“The nite at camp we found out he had died.”
“Oh.” she squeezed his hand. “That was a bad night.”
“Im sorry i couldnt be there for you, more.” he said, shaking his head. “I felt like if i had had more to say then maybe you wouldnt have left and your life...” his voice trailed off. They didnt need to talk about what had happened after that summer. She had left camp, rebounded into an engagement with a guy who treated her like crap. He had broken what was left of her heart, and she moved away from her family and friends to heal. A wild year including stripping, traveling, older guys and another bout with anorexia had left her emotionally devastated, physically unhealthy and far far from the woman she had been. He wasnt exactly sure what turned her around, but something had, and he was happy for it.
“Darling, nothing that happened was your fault.” she whispered, so quietly
that he turned the music off to hear her. She put her forehead against his shoulder and sighed shakily. “In fact, sweetie, you were one of the things that kept me going.”
“What?” he turned, genuinely surprised and she squeezed his bicep.
“You meant alot to me.” she didnt explain, and they kept driving, her head buried against him, holding on to his arm. Her mind was racing back five years to when she first met him.
So, anyway, i guess thats it!” she had thrown back her head and laughed, recounting the previous days shenanigans with her boyfriend and their friends. He had smiled watching her, and she had shrugged. “I mean, i was all dirty and my hair was freaking out, but he thinks im beautiful, so i guess thats what counts!”
He had reached across the table and touched her face gently. “I can see why he thinks you are beautiful. “ he had smiled at her and left to begin his morning chores.
She had held onto that for years. Years of anorexia, avoiding the mirror because she thought she was ugly, a period of obsessing over her looks because she never thought she looked perfect... then she would remember him, and smile. The hug he had given her the night she found out about her boyfriend had been the only good memory of that year she had. Not only did he think she was beautiful, but he was looking out for her. Her two life preservers in a world of hurt, anger, and uncertainty. She closed her eyes against the sting of tears and cleared her throat.
“Where are we going?”
“Just up to this lake thats up in the rocks.”
“I LOVE lakes!” her eyes lit up, and she sat forward and he laughed.
“I am aware of that. That is why we are driving there. Did you bring a bathing suit? The waters cold, but its better then the camp lake.”
“No, but i brought a pair of shorts and a tank top.” he glanced down at her short summer dress.
“Fair enough. Its hot enough out you will dry pretty quick.”
“Ok!” she hopped out of the truck, and ran towards the lake. Before he had gotten out of the truck all the way, she had pulled her dress up over her head and stepped on top of a huge boulder. He leaned against the truck to watch as she she jumped off the rock and splashed into the lake in a cannon ball. It was an unusual entrance for her, normally preferring a graceful dip or a swan dive. It was still tripping him out a little bit, that he was the one that was seeing her naked, seeing her wet, the object of her kisses, her desire, that he was the one who had sole possession of her body. She had told him in a brief phone call a couple weeks ago, that he had been the last person she had been with, and she wanted it that way.
She struck out across the lake, moving fast, the water glinting off her body and hair streaming out behind her. It wasnt a very big lake, and she hit the other side and was on her way back within a couple of minutes.
He had stretched out on the blanket from his truck, and watched as she stepped from the lake.
Water streamed from her hair, down across her body, catching the light as she shook it free. She was like something out of magazine, something out of a book, something that had stepped from his dreams into his arms.
“That felt great.” she lay next to him, stretching her lean body out and closing her eyes against the glare of the sun. “Thank you for bringing me here.” he smiled and didnt say anything.
“Im mad that we have to leave tomorrow.” she continued. He had to fly back to his navy base, and she had to get back to her life farther south. “This weekend is just as good as last time, and even though i cant wait for next time, it will have to be weeks and weeks.” she groaned, “I am the most impatient person EVER! I cant wait that long to be this relaxed again!” he moved a hand from behind his head and laid his arm across her body, fingers resting lightly against her hip. She smiled and gripped his arm with both hands.
“Why dont you come stay with me?” silence followed his words and he held his breath.
“Come again?”
“Why dont you come stay with me?” he repeated, sitting up. She sat up also, pushing her hair out of her face, confused.
“I am not exactly sure what you mean by that, and im a little afraid to ask.” she said this with a little laugh, even though he could tell by the look on her face she was feeling trepidation.
He sat up fully, and backed up to lean against the rock. He pulled her against his chest, and put his chin on her shoulder, trying to choose his words carefully.
“Why dont you fly back with me to Los Angeles, and stay with me?”
“Maybe in a couple weekends, darling.” she tried to cover up the shake in her voice, but couldnt, and he kicked himself mentally. Of course she didnt understand what he was asking.
“Tomorrow.” he insisted softly,, kissing her sun warmed skin skin, feeling her back arch a little bit. “Come back with me tomorrow. I have a huge apartment, and you will fit in perfectly.”
“Well honey i have a photo shoot, i just cant cancel it.”
“There is plenty of work in california for you. And you have been staying in a furnished apartment. Just pack your clothes.”
“You’re serious.” she started to turn and look at him, but he kept her still. “You want me to come to California with you. And stay for how long, exactly? I cant go without a plan!”
“Here’s the plan, hun.” He kissed her neck again, then bit lightly and she moaned. “You come to California, lay on the beach, take pretty pictures, wow all of my friends, sleep in my bed...” his voice trailed off, and he kissed her again. ‘And how about you and I never lose touch again?”
“Well that sounds great, but-wait, what?” she had just realized what he was saying, and couldnt believe her ears.
He laughed. “Baby i want you to move to California with me.”
“Oh!” she fell silent, unsure of what to say.
The silence stretched on for what seemed like eternity. He kept his face buried in her neck mentally pleading with her to say yes.
Her mind was racing back years and years to when the two of them had become best friends. Scene after scene flew through her head, memories. All of them were good when they had him involved. Every last one.
“I cant say yes.” she finally said.
“Why not?” she shrugged, her slim shoulders brushing his chin.
“I cant move states with someone I am not dating.”
He chuckled and pressed a kiss to her neck.
“Date me, hun. Go out with me. Start a relationship, whatever you want to call it. Whatever it takes for you to move with me.”
“Ok.” he could hear the smile in her voice and she turned in his arms, straddling his lap and pressd her forehead to his. “I will move with you.”
“Awesome.” he breathed a sigh of relief and she kissed him. Her eyes filled with tears and she buried her face in his neck to hide them. Her life had been so hard, so torn up for too long, and he was offering her salvation, a way out. She bit into his shoulder a little bit, and His hands dropped from her back down to her perfect ass and squeezed it gently. She laughed and pulled away.
“Did you think i would say no? Silly Boy. Lets go swimming,” she hopped off of him and ran back towards the water, hiding the tears streaming down her face. He ran a hand through his short hair and sighed in relief, before joining her in the water.
Cold water turns me on.” she had sent him a wink, stepping up the ladder from the lake. At sixteen, she was the fastest swimmer in the group and a head lifeguard. Her boyfriend handed her a towel and she wrapped her small frame in it, smiling at her sweetie gently.
His heart had twisted inside of him. He couldnt help how he felt about her, regardless of her relationship status.
“You coming up for coffee?” she asked, shaking the water out of her hair.
“Ill be up in a second, just going to clean up here.”
“Ok!” she had wrapped her arms around him in a quick, wet, hug, then turned and headed up towards the cabin for dry clothes.
“Does it bother you that you cant have her?” A smaller teenager asked suddenly. “I mean, its so obvious to everyone except for her. You will have to wait till her and her boyfriend break up before you get a chance.” He had shrugged and told the kid it didnt matter, she loved him as a friend and he would take that.
“Ill give you a kiss if you tell me what you are thinking!” she swam up next to him and smiled. He pulled her close and kissed her, hard.
“Or i will just take one if i want!” he grinned and she pressed into him, deepening the kiss and biting his bottom lip gently in a possessive gesture.
“Yes you can.”

“Wait, you are what?” her ex asked incredulously, as she appeared at his front door.
“I am moving to San Diego. To be with him. I just wanted to make sure you have everything you left with me.”
“You are moving to San Diego to live with someone you have only hung out with twice.”
“No.” she put a box down in his living room and smiled at one of his three roomates. “I have known him for over five years and have been best friends for at least that long. I dont have any ties here, so why not move?”
“So thats what you do? Just see a guy for the first time in forever and decide to move with him?”
Oh sweetheart.” she straightened and smoothed the front of her short dress. “You dont have a say in what i do anymore, remember?” she smiled at him sweetly. “Good Luck in school.” she kissed his cheek, waved to his roomates and turned on her heels to go.
He was waiting in the cab and opened the door for her.
“Ready?”
She took a deep breath.
“Yes.”
