Coals

An old circus act, you always held the roasting coals
Too close for sympathy, with a secret malice.

Hidden from those who inspected, but never protected
From your burden by more than circus magic.

A pulse of mishap less than tragic left me faking
And change all my decision making to hide from you

The fact that I was hurting too, swept off like
The pain from your fuel- but then the shift.

Like Macbeth’s love, that fatal path attracts
And cracks the look of fate ‘til it was me

Who went beyond control
And took from you that burning coal.
