It's the last game of the season and I'm so excited! Dad always says that I get overly excited when it comes to soccer but who cares? Besides what does he know? I can feel my adrenalin pumping and I can't wait to spring into action, even if I am just a defender. We arrive at precisely 7:30, 30 minutes before the game for a quick warm up. I rush up to my team, Big Red, and greet them enthusiastically. This is our last game together and the first one that my friends, Blair and Mary Nell, will be seeing. I can't wait to show them how vicious I can be on the field. I can feel my mouth curving in a smirk and my eye brows lowering to creat an evil face. \"Kat,\" says my coach. \"Try not to hurt yourself today. Andifyou do, please come off the field instead of playing the whole game.\" \"If you feel that way coach,\" I responded, \"then you will never know if I'm hurt or not.\" What ever coach was about to say was drowned out when my mother called me over. Looking apologetically, though I wasn't, back at coach I raced off to answer my mom's call. \"What is it mom,\" I asked her as I got near. \"Your father and I wanted to make sure you knew to take it easy today. Your dad has a bad feeling and you know how he and his feelings are.\" \"Ya I know, I have to go now mom, catch ya later. Love you!\" With that I ran off. Yikes, I thought, if dad feels like something is going to happen then he is probably right. He feelingsalwaysproved to be spot on. Oh well I'm sure I'll be fine. \"Kat,\" Sarah, my closest friend on the team, called in greeting. \"No surprise but we are on defense.\" \"Yippee,\" I said in honest happiness. I love defense, it's where I shine, \" Sarah! Kat,\" called coach, motioning us towards him. \"Looks like the game is starting early so let's get out there and win this,\" he's aid when we joined him and the reat of the team, adressing us all. \"We haven't lost a signal game this season. Let's keep it that way. Big Red on three, one... two... three!\" \"Big Red,\" the whole team screamed and raced off onto the field. I immediately went into my position as center defense. I had Sarah to my right and Kathrine to my left, just like every game. When the other team ran onto the field, all of Big Red screamed of the top of their lungs. Our opponent looked at us but they were not surprised. We've faced the before and they know of our tactics to intimidate them. With an evil grin on my face I called a greeting to their center foward who always got mad when she couldn't beat me, which happens every time. Only problem was thatthistimesheinned back and I got a very unsettling feeling that she had something planned for me. Something that I wasn't going to like. I let it slide though, to focus on it would cause me to mess up in the game. If only I had known then that the feeling would have saved me from serious pain if only I had listened to it. The reff blew the wistle and everyone on the field immidiately reacted. Our team had the ball and the sun to our back so we had the advantage. We took advantage of that and kept the ball high in the air, where the other team couldn't see but we could. Within the first five minutes we scored a goal. That's when I notice a change in the other teams stances and the way they looked at us. Not as an opponent but like prey. \"Guy,\" I called to my team, \"come here for a second.\" The team gathered around me and I explained to them what I noticed and told them to be on their gaurd. Since they knew me really well, they nodded and headed back to the positions, taking my words to heart and now very cautious. The opposing center foward smiled at me again and I felt the same uneasy feeling I felt before. The reff blew his wistle and the center foward passed the ball to her teammate. Normally my eyes would follow the ball but I couldn't take my eyes off the opposing center foward. Not until my fellow defenders called my name, asking me to help. Maybe if I hadn't taken my eyes off the other player I would have expected what happened. With a yell I rushed to my teammate's side and she backed off to let me deal with this player while she covered me and regained her breath. The player I was guarding passed the ball to the opposing center foward and I immediately told my team to back off, that she was mine. With a growl I charge at the girl. She just stood there and smiled, at the last moment she moved foward but my reactions are amazing fast and I moved with her, step for step. I raced with her all along the side of the field, shoulder to shoulder. I reached out my left leg and managed to get a foot on the ball. I immediately saw my mistake, she was waiting for just that move. I watched as though in slow motion as her foot came up and slammed on my knee, breaking it. With a scream I crashed to the ground. My family and friends were sitting just there on the sideline and Mary Nell and Blair both got up from their seats simotanteously. \"That was uncalled for,\" Mary Nell yelled at the girl. \"Agreed,\" was all Blair said. \"Would you like a taste,\" asked the girl, lunging over me and gripping a handful of Mary Nell's hair. She kicked Mary Nell's legs, right where the knees bend so that Mary Nell dropped to her knees, her hair forcing her to archer back to relieve some strain. With an evil grin, the girl slammed Mary Nell'sface towards the ground. Luckily I had gotten up by this time and caught Mary Nell just before she hit the ground. The girl released Mary Nell's hair and kicked hard in the stomach to send her spinning away from us. Blair immediately went to her aid while I dealed with the girl. \"Want to play,\" the girl asked me. \"Sure. My turn,\" I responded, rushing at her. She wasn't expecting me to be able to walk, let alone run, but seeing her try to hurt my friend gave me enough strength to run. I slammed my whole body into her and drove her flying backwards. She cried out and I could hear the air rushing from her lungs. Before she could get up I leaped onto her and held her down. \"Are you done,\" I asked the struggling form beneath me. \"Not by a long shot,\" she said through clenched teeth as she heaved as strong as she could and managed to get me off of her. With a grunt I rolled over onto my bad leg. With a cry full of pain I rolled onto my back and glanced just I'm time to see the girls fist coming towards my face. My instincts kicked into over drive and automatically rolled me over onto my good leg and pulled me up off the ground. With a grunt, my attacker looked up at me just in time to see me do a back flip with my bad leg tucked in and my good leg straight out. My good leg hit her straight in the face and knocks her out cold. By this time, one of the adults had called the cops and the hospital. The cops already knew I was the victim so they took the girl's unconscious form and put it of the stretcher then strapped it down. Another ambulance came by for Mary Nell and me. The doctors said my knee was in really bad condition and that it would need to be fixed immediately. They pulled out another stretcher with restraints, put me on it, and strapped me down. They fixed my leg right then and there with me screaming and hollering. If it wasn't for the restraints I would have attacker the doctors and messed up my leg even more. When they had finished they loaded me onto the ambulance beside Mary Nell who had a broken rib. I reached out to her and she took my proffered hand and we stayed that way the whole ride to the hospital.
