Poem about high school life.

The girls were all dressed to impress in their evening best

The apartment was filled to the brim

Bursting at the seams that were so delicately stitched together by

Peeling paint and chipping plaster

The music was loud and moved through the crowd of people

Like a pulse

Like a gust of wind moves through the hot thick night air

The kind that reaches you and brushes ever so faintly against sweaty skin

But is never enough to cool you down

The drinks were

Cool to the touch

Cool to the taste and

They carved a line of ice

Down to your stomach

To your core

Where they rested

Where they filled the people that tried to fill that spot with other things but

Couldn’t quite manage it

Didn’t quite know what to do or how to do it

Because they weren’t quite sure what “it” was

But those girls that were dressed to impress knew what “it was

Or they thought they did.

Maybe their “it” is different from my “it”

But who is to say whose “it” is the right “it”?

But I digress

Those girls who were dressed to impress

Sauntered around the apartment with the

Peeling paint and chipping plaster

And moved to the beat

The pulse that the music sent through the room

Like a breeze through the hot thick air

And some of the found their “it” and some of them didn’t

Some of them realized that the “It” they thought they wanted wasn’t the “It” they needed

“it”s changed hands and were broken

And words were spoken and some were unspoken

And lives changed and dreams were shattered

And reputations were built and some reputations remained tattered

Beyond repair

All of it happened in that apartment

Lives played out in the apartment

Memories were made in that apartment

That apartment that was bursting at the seams as the

Paint peeled and the plaster chipped.
