It is almost 1 pm on a Friday afternoon. I began college at Old Dominion University 3 weeks ago. Now I am enjoying the campus and the beautiful weather God has blessed  us with on this 17th day of September, 2010.

There are 3 other benches around me occupied by 2 other people. One is a young black female, working on some school work and watching the squirrels play. The other is an older bald gentleman enjoying smoking his wooden pipe. Regardless of what’s in the pipe, tobacco or another substance, I’m sure he is enjoying the day like me. This old man brings back memories from when my life wasn’t so good. It takes me back to the summer of 2008 when I was struggling in all aspects of my life. Back then, I knew a man named Kenny, he was older in age as well. He had been released from jail and was living with his sister and their mother across the street. Every time he saw me he tried to make me happy and talk about things with me. Also, almost every time I saw Kenny he had a wooden smoking pipe. Kenny’s pipe was similar to the mans pipe, across from me, relaxing underneath the shade from the trees surronding us.

Now I can look back and be thankful for someone like Kenny, who actually somewhat cared. My life, has gotten so much better and I can have good memories of this place too. The walkway to the right of me that is underneath the beautiful trees and shade reminds me of this summer. The summer of 2010 was the best yet. In Virginia Beach, Virginia at 89th street, there is a walkway that takes you through the woods to get to the beach. Going to the beach is on of my favorite pastimes, so being reminded of it while I’m at college is pretty awesome.

We will all have bad memories and good memories. We will also have bad triggers and good triggers. Today, I choose to remember the good things God has handed me in life. I choose to make the best of today.
