Artist Statement

Short Story by: Kathryn

Summary

Here's so Booksie can get a better glimpse of who I am as a visual artist, not just a poet. This is the artist statement that I have in my portfolio and, if I can figure it out, I intend to put some pictures of my artwork up so you can put the words to a picture.

When you ask me who I am as an artist, I look to my journey for an answer. My journey as an artist has barely begun, but looking back on it, I’ve learned a lot. When I first began classes, I avoided people as subjects. I cowered away from the difficulty that human figures and faces gave me. Over time, I found the more I challenged myself, the more my weakness became my favorite subject. Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with humanity as portrayed in art.

I try to find a way to take the human spirit and convey it through the body in a romantic and emotional manner. Essentially, I want to turn people inside out. While trying to gain proficiency in displaying emotion, I want my artwork to tell a story. Using a predominately film noir style and oil paints as my medium, I craft smooth beauty into a wishful haven. I aspire to create art pieces that transcend limitations in time and location and reach out to anyone to tell them a story they could be apart of. I look for inspiration in artists like Jack Vettriano, Edward Martinez, and Edward Hopper.

My artwork has a voice and it is a testament to the lessons my experiences have taught me. I create art for me. I create art because I have learned that art changes people and people change art. I know that the relationship between creator and creation exhibits the purpose of humanity. That is the part where my art comes full circle.

I am not just an artist, I am a translator. I translate life into art. I look around me and find inspiration in the most mundane things this world has to offer. My pieces are illustrations of my life. I sketch things and people in my mind in the hopes of retaining a particular moment in time forever by transcribing it later onto canvas or paper or even a napkin. I try to capture the ordinary in the most extraordinary ways possible. I know how to see art in everything, and through this gift, I can bring the world to light.

Most of the time you can tell who a girl is by looking in her closet. What she wears is the wrapping paper on who she is. It tells you about her personality. If you look in my closet though, you will find one formerly confused girl. It will tell you about all the personalities I tried to be. When I am the artist, I can be whoever I want to be, and more importantly, find the person I am supposed to be. I realize that who I am is simply enough, and the girl I could be pales in comparison. I think that was the answer buried inside of me.
