Voila my insipid little geometry project. The assignment was to create a short story that would help you remember the trig functions: sin, cos, and tan. I think it turned out mildly amusing.

Vive la soh-cah-toa!

Little Billy was the smartest boy in the entire 3rd grade. Every year he won the school’s geography bee, so this year nobody anticipated what would unfold.

Little Billy easily defeated all of the inferior competitors in the preliminary and semi-final rounds, but it was all downhill from there. The epic struggle between Billy and his arch-nemesis Randolfo lasted for 5 and a half straight days, until the judge finally decided to issue a final question.

“What is the state located directly south of North Dakota?”

Billy was ecstatic. He could taste victory. After all, he knew the answer: South Dakota. If only he could pronounce it.

“Sohcah Toa,” he said.

There was a long pause.

“What?” The judge asked.

Oh no! Billy’s debilitating speech impediment was going to lose him everything! Sorrow ripped at his soul.

“Sohcah Toa,” he said with a edge of panic in his voice.

The judge looked slightly frightened.

“SOHCAH TOA!!!” He screeched like a wounded animal.

“I’m sorry Billy that is not correct. Randolfo, you are the winner of this year’s Geography bee.”

A hush descended on the crowd. Billy had lost? From that fateful day forward, all of the students remembered the solemn story of Little Billy and his tortured cry of Sohcah Toa.
