Katniss has waited a thousand years for this. Peeta/Katniss. Hunger Games; losely based on the book.

A Thousand Years

Hunger Games

Heart beats

Katniss ran, the sounds of screams and cannon booms ringing in her ears. Her head began to pound as she tried to figure out where to go, where to hide, what to do. She screamed as she felt warm blood splatter on her leg and turned around to see a small boy from District 7 who she recognized from training with a spear in his side. No, no, no. She tumbled and rolled down a hill, already feeling hot tears in her eyes. As she stood and gazed at her surroundings in disbelief, she, for no apparent reason, thought of Peeta.

And panicked.

What if he’s dead? He can’t be! He can’t! Why is … why am I thinking of this? Katniss thought. Why do I care? The idiot used me for an edge, saying he loved me, and I really don’t care if he was just ‘helping me’. He USED me. He LIED to me. I HATE him. But I’m worried about him.

Colors and promises

As Katniss ran, she thought of the night when he saved her. That bread had meant the world to her, and for a moment, a split second, she thought she might like Peeta Mellark. She thought he might be caring, funny, until she saw through him.

Had he just wanted to kill her?

How to be brave

Peeta had given her this warmth inside, this bravery that she’d never felt anywhere else. She loved that feeling, she wanted it, and she wanted to see him.

Please don’t let him be gone.

How can I love, when I’m afraid

Time passed before Katniss saw her Peeta again. But when she saw him with the Careers, hunting her down, it hurt her inside. That want for him was suddenly gone, and she felt hatred in its place. When she saw him trying to save her in attempts to keep Cato and his friends away, she didn’t want to believe it. And when she cut down the tracker-jackers nest, she prayed they wouldn’t kill him.

After Rue’s death, after they announced two tributes could win, she was frantic. She needed to be with him, to win with him.

To fall … But watching you stand alone; all of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow …

When Katniss found Peeta, camouflaged by that lake, it lit her up. It renewed the Girl on Fire’s flare. She would care for him, nurture him. He couldn’t and wouldn’t die! When they won, the love was stronger. Gale, Effie, Haymitch … they could try to get in the way, but nothing would ruin what Katniss had waited so long for.

I have died everyday waiting for you Darlin' don't be afraid I have loved you for a Thousand years I'll love you for a Thousand more

Katniss Everdeen

I hope you enjoy my story. Not the best and not based on the exact order of events in the 1st book of Hunger Games but it's still good. I'll be posting a lot more Hunger Games fan-fiction so I hope you read my others.
