Summary

This is written from the perspective of a young teenager/adult. It describes the struggle of trying to find yourself in today's world, while also trying to meet your parents' approval. It also describes living in a chaotic, often violent home, watching your parents make the wrong decisions in their relationship and in life, and have the hope that you won't end up making the same mistakes.

Mistakes

By: Kayla Valdine Meyers

I don't know what you call this, but it's not love
It all comes down when push comes to shove
How did it happen, did you never learn
Now I'm the one who has to watch as you crash and burn

And we can't find what's real in what you've shown us
So now we starve ourselves and light up
It's just an escape, the only way to be free
Sorry, we can't be who you want us to be

And I know it's me you blame for things you didn't do
Forgive me for being the reason you never got through
All I really want is acceptance from you
To do everything I want, and still please you, too

Now I've learned from your mistakes
To avoid getting hurt, I'd rather walk away
Won't get unhappily married and swear my life away
And I'll be sure to say 'I love you' to my kids every day

Mine won't have to wander the street
Or look to strangers to get what they can't have from me
They won't find happiness in pill form
Because they'll know they can always come home

When all is said and done
All I can do is hope I'll be the one
To learn to love as you never could
And live the way you never would
