Tyler and I walked on the side of a back road. The back road where we had first met each other two years ago. He was walking, I was walking. I had just moved to Florida from Nevada, we simply bumped in to each other and started talking. We had been dating ever since.

His bright blue eyes weren’t as blue as they were a week ago, it was like the color had faded from them. His naturally tan skin, had seemed to go away.

“Tyler.” I whispered. “What’s wrong?”

He didn’t answer me right away, he looked down at the black top, hesitating. “Bailey-” he started. “I have cancer.” tears slowly falling down his now pale cheeks. I let go of his hand and looked at him in concern. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Just a week ago he didn’t have cancer, just two days ago he didn’t have cancer how could this possibly happen. Tears prickled at the corner of my eyes.

“How did it happen?”

“The doctors don’t know, my mom noticed a bump on my back yesterday and took me to the doctors first thing this morning. They caught it early, so they might be able to take it away but there not sure.”

Tears came from my eyes and from his. I grabbed both of his hands as we sat down near the edge of the road. I closed my eyes leaning in to his chest, he wrapped his arms around me. I couldn’t lose him, he was the best thing that had happened to me since I moved here. He was my only friend, he was the only one I could talk to about everything. He made me happy, he took care of me when I was sick. .

“You’re a fighter, were going to fight through this together. I will not lose you.”

“Promise me.” He whispered. “Promise you will stay with me through everything.”

“I promise, Tyler, I promise.”

He grabbed my hands pulling me up from the road. The summer sun, making his blue eyes shine again as though there was hope. His tan skin seemed to come out from where it was hiding as he wrapped his arms back around me. Both mine and his tears dried up.

I grabbed his face, making our lips touch. Sparks went off in my body like the first time I kissed him. Just like the first, this could be my last. I was determined though, determined that it would not be the last. We would fight, fight through this together and he would be mine, now and forever.
