The Life of Sarah Hastings
Have you ever felt as though you did not fit into a particular group? Have you ever felt as though you did not meet the “norm” and was perceived as different? Well, if you haven’t Sarah Hastings sure did. Sarah Hastings was a teenager who lived in a small town called Watsonville, California where she spent most of her life. She did not have many friends. In fact, the only friend Sarah did have was her dog, Max. Sarah worked at a job selling clothes in Watsonville at a store that her parent’s owned. On Sarah’s free time she would play sports, ride quads, and go shopping. Sarah was just like any other teenage girl, except she had wings. I am not talking about the kind of wings that people talk about when referring about someone who is strong and mighty, although she was both of those things. I am talking about big, humongous white wings that were attached to Sarah’s back. In most towns, people would see wings as heavenly and see her as if she were an angel from Heaven. In Sarah’s town people perceived Sarah’s wings as unholy and not normal since she was a little girl. Watsonville, California is a town full of people who go to the same Church, St. Josephs. The people in that town believed that if Sarah Hastings had wings and planned to keep the wings she was inhuman and should be treated accordingly because she was against the bible in their view. Sarah’s family did not attend St. Josephs because of the town’s view of Sarah. Instead, Sarah’s family kept to themselves and lived their life with little help from their community.
Sarah Hastings did not view of her gift of wings as something to be ashamed of. When Sarah was put into situations like going to school and running errands she would ignore the looks of others. When Sarah went to the grocery store in Watsonville, people of all ages will walk in other isles to avoid Sarah as if they would catch something from her. They would also give her mean looks as if she had murdered someone. When Sarah went to school kids would laugh at her and call her names. They would treat Sarah as if she were a clown. Sarah would just laugh back at them and tell them she was not ashamed. Everybody in Watsonville believed that Sarah was inhuman and not normal but Sarah’s views of herself surpassed the thoughts of her town. Sarah had a gift of wings that she believed will allow her to do great things in the future. She believed that she was worth greater than how her town treated her. Sarah believed in equality. This is what made Sarah Hastings special.
