How fast the path disappears
How vague
The trail back ill defined
You search and you search
You wonder if it's like an elven gate
If the moon needs to hit it just so or
You must send off your pony or
You read a script of runes in your native magical language that you haven't used since . . . since
Worse yet
The gate asks you
To believe in something
When faith is as faint as the path you're trying to find

But there's a reason why
The way that once seemed so familiar and so common
Is elluding you
Like the white hind slipping through the forest
Like the heart you long to hold in your hand so juicy and sweet and ripe with blood, stuff it in your mouth, make it part of you, finally be one, let no man tear you asunder:
I've burned
Every crook in the road
Each nuance
Each gnarled root and worn stone each
Meandering, capricious little line
Because I'm rather in favor of the highway now
Especially when theres no one else on it
but me
