Maia

“Can’t we start again?” she pleaded.

I stared at her pinkish eyes, and shook my head slowly. Tears burst from her eyes, and Maia started to yell things at me. I tried to calm her down, but she kept raising her voice.

“Maia, please. It’s not like you’re the only one who is hurt. Both of us are.”

“Then why do we have to break up?” she sobbed, “that way I won’t hurt you and… And so do you, Pete.”

I sighed, “We being in a relationship is what hurt us, Maia. I—“ I hesitated for a moment, thinking whether I should continue or not. “I can’t, Maia. I don’t want us to be hurt more than we already are. And you should look for another guy who is willing to do everything you want.” I kissed her cheek one last time, and said, “Thank you and good bye, Maia.”

I turned and walked to her front door, and stopped abruptly when I heard a thud behind me. Something heavy. I turned with a gasp.

“Maia! What are you—what have you done?” I glanced at the pocketknife next to her and ran to her side, trying to stop the red blood that was gushing out from her left wrist. “What the hell are you thinking Maia? This won’t solve the problem!” I tore off my shirt and started to working on her wrist.

“Well, at least you did run back to save me. You’re the only one I want, Peter. I don’t want to lose you, not even once.” She winced when I tied my shirt hard to stop her bleeding. Her lips were starting to become paler and paler, and her eyes started to drifting off. She was loosing too much blood, my hands were sticky with her fresh blood.

“Look, I have to call ambulance. Stay he—“ She grabbed the hem of my shirt, and whispered, “No, I don’t need them. I only need you, Pete. Please don’t leave me alone. I’m scared.”

“I’m here, Maia. I’m only calling for the ambulance to let them help you, so you won’t die from loosing blood. I promise I won’t leave you.” Those words just ran out from my mouth, I did not even know what I was talking about. I did still love her, but we were supposed to break up.

“I won’t leave you too, Pete. You will always be in my heart, and you will never be able to forget me.”

Her voice become faint, I barely heard what she said. I ran to call the ambulance and her parents, telling them that Maia was in danger. I ran to her kitchen, grab a bottle of water and back to Maia’s living room.

“Here, drink this. It’ll—Maia?” My heart started to beat faster, sensing something was wrong. I knelt beside her, and saw she closed her eyes as if she was sleeping.

“Maia? Hey, wake up. Babe? Wake up, please.” I shook her gently and tapped her cheek lightly. No, no. This could not be happening. Maia won’t leave me forever, not now. I tried to wake her up, but she was not breathing at all. Warm tears ran down from my eyes, and I could hear the ambulance’s wailing from afar.
