CELEBRATING WOMEN'S DAY
On March 8 the world will be celebrating international women’s day. According to International women’s day website International Women's Day has been observed since 1900’s, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.
It further states that IWD is celebrated as an official holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. This day has witnessed men honoring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, with various gifts.
In Zambia Women’s day is celebrated across all corners of the Zambia. The organizer of the women’s day in Zambia have arranged a number of activities some of the activities include the Match pass, Women conference at Mulungush and the Launch on for honoring individuals that have contributed greatly to the development of women agenda in Zambia.
The celebration of women’s day this year brings to my mind a number of thoughts. The first thought is respect for all women. Respecting women is one of the most important issues that the world at large should observe. Therefore, we need to respect women.
Respect for women covers across so many issues. For instance, we should respect women in power, women in business, religious women, career women married women etc. All women deserve our respect both young and old, rich and the poor. The demand for respect is not only from men but from all sectors in society, either individuals or corporate entities.
Many are the times I feel embarrassed whenever I watch the beauty pageant. I say so because there is a huge difference between the ways the men are paraded at the catwalk and the way women are paraded. In some cases, they have to walk in their underwear passing the judges and spectators. I have failed to find the reason to why such a segment is provided at the beauty pageant. I feel there is a need for the organizers of such event to revisit. I feel our women deserve the respect.
I also know that our sports ladies run with their sport pants. When I was young my father could not watch with us athletics if women were running. He felt it was wrong to see women run in these pants. He said to us that it was not okay for women to expose their bodies instead he suggested that sports manufacturers should redesign women sportswear.
How sad it is to watch our women dance either at a traditional ceremony or contemporary music. Some of the women dancers in many music videos are not worth to watch. Sometimes when am watching a music video with my child on DSTV I need to have a remote control in my hand for just in case. It is also surprising sometimes some songs have no connection between the song and what we see in the videos. All in all am saying let’s revisit some of these practices. Our women deserve the respect we should not take advantage of their weak position.
At the individual level, we all have to respect women. It is sad to see men who cheat on their wives just for sex even when this product is given to them 100% in home. It is very embarrassing indeed. Why should a married man go and look for extra marital affair even when their wives are still active.
A friend of mine narrated to me a story where his sister‘s husband could go on the drinking spree and leave his children with no food. I also heard several stories where men have gone ahead to buy posh vehicles for girlfriends, lavish their girlfriend but leave their wives and children in misery. All these cases need to be changed so that our women can be respected.
The other thought that women’s day bring to me is the need to support women. We need to support all women regardless where they come from. This thought concerns all of us either men or women. The fight for equality in society is the cause for everyone. Social status segregation should come to an end. All women should be treated equal. This is whether one is coming from low or high densities area. No one should be segregated based on their social status.
We all need to support to our women.
