“Once upon a time”
Those words I’ve learned to hate
Words which force me into
A frenzied state

It’s not the beginning which
Causes me to cringe,
But the cotton candied,
Sugar coated hug and kiss fest
Which is the end

No it’s “happily ever after”
The words which the phrase completes,
Those words which make we want to…

I’m probably a fool
For being angered at a fairy tale
But they really didn’t peg
The ending so well

You’re telling me Cinderella and the
No-named prince
Had marital bliss?
Ha, not if they had kids

I’m not saying happy endings
Are an impossible thing
But that they seem to happen
So commonly so
One thing I wish to know…

Are fairy tale characters really so flat
That the endings are always as simple as that?

No, I doubt it

I think if the ending is true
There must be something behind
Like Cinderella taking something
To ease her mind…

Or perhaps once more history got it all wrong
And the ending should be
They never got along
And divorced in year three.
