I waited till he came by the corner and quickly hid behind my curtains. Pretended I wasn’t looking. I didn’t go out until he was metres away and I could see only his back. Behind him I asked, "Are you going to the fair tonight? I hope you are, ‘coz I’ll be there." And hope against hope that she will meet the man he loves in the fair.

The place was full of happy and excited hustle. Everywhere happy voices and merry sounds are heard. As I enter the fair my eyes roamed every face in the crowd.

"I know he’s here." I could feel it in my heart.

He was looking at her but she didn’t see. From a distance he was waiting for her near the entrance. Patiently he waited. For so long. Now has come the time. He has stalled for so much time in the past. She didn’t come with anyone. And that must be a pretty good sign. He must take the chance now, or forever be a coward. Left with what-if’s…
***
Finally she saw him. Amidst the crowd, he was standing by the popcorn stand. She made her way toward him as fast as the crowd allowed her, never taking her eyes off of him. And when she was just a heartbeat, he turned and smiled, eagerly awaited her arrival.

Her heart caught in her throat, it filled with excitement. And began to beat as though she was riding a roller coaster. She smiled, too.

She opened her mouth to say "Hi!" but no word came out. No sound was heard. Her jaw opened and hanged as she saw him put his arms around a beautiful girl just a couple of feet in front of her. And when he gave her a welcome kiss, she felt her heart dropped. A heavy weight in her stomach. She looked down and saw her heart fell to the ground. She felt people walked over it; kicked it, and stomped on it.

In a jerk she turned around, away from the scene, and bumped into someone. When she looked, the guy was holding what was left of a huge pink cotton candy. It was smashed into his chest up to his cheek. Her initial reaction would be shock. But he looked so handsomely ridiculous she could barely hold her laughter.

Until she couldn’t take it anymore and just burst into giggles. The guy, not taking his eyes off her said: "Glad you found this mess amusing." And joined her fit of laughter. They laughed until their sides hurt.

"Oh, I’m sorry…" She finally managed to say, in between wiping the tears from her eyes.

"Guess you’ll just have to buy me another one." He said in a melodious, almost familiar voice, gesturing to his cotton candy, which already melted.

She stopped suddenly when he heard this.

"Do I know you?" She asked, baffled.

"Oh, right, my bad." He said and extended his free hand. "I’m Kevin. Sandra, right?"

"How did you…?"

"I sat behind you in Math class last year and through this year."

"Well, I never.." But she was lost for words. Ironically though, she didn’t feel lost. She couldn’t help herself smiling and staring from his hazel eyes. Her eyes shone, and in them reflected… Hope.
