Freak, he whispers.
The insult falls from me;
not sliding,
cutting.
What do they know anyway?
Dumb jock.
A girl smiles.
A perfect smile, perfect hair, perfect face.
Perfect life.
She waves at me.
Mainstream poser.
She dances towards me
blinding with happiness.
Her life glows.
Joy.
I glare.
She smiles
with knowing eyes.
I pull away.
The scars on her skin are deeper,
truer than mine.
Old scars that can’t quite vanish from her skin.
She pats her heart
where her mother lives now.
Straightens her clothes on the body
that has been taken advantage of
too many times.
Smiles a smile
that is real.
She reaches her hand out,
“Let me show you”
Fear of changing,
wanting to be different.
All judgments.
They wash away.
I take her hand
to be lead to a happier place.
