Our unconscious acceptance of changes caused by time allows us to use past memories.

We all live in an ever changing world.

We, also, change in body and in mind,
yet we can keep the links to memory, hurled
across the changing years. We still can find
the friend or foe of time past. Though the stuff
that makes us what we are is all renewed,
and features alter, yet there is enough,
intangible but real, of pact or feud,
to see this changeling as the very one
that we knew long ago when first we met.

(Amazingly, we think, time’s changes done,
that somehow we ourselves are ourselves yet.)

And we can do the same with fiction too,
since we can tell James Bond from Doctor Who!
