Shadowland

Shadowland...the place is strikingly familiar, though she cannot tell why. Everything is sort of hazy. Fire is burning everywhere, the roaring flames consuming every living thing. The crescent moon is shrouded by the thick pall of smoke, making it barely visible to the naked eye. The storm is coming. The one that will destroy the last remnants of hope humanity has left.

Time is the essence here, yet she cannot force herself to run. She slowly drags herself to the circle of stones, her feet getting heavier with every step. Suddenly, just as the first lightning strikes, she realizes, she has been here before. She has foreseen all of this happening. She could have stopped it, could have prevented it. Now, it is almost too late. She knows she needs to hurry. She swiftly takes twelve stones out of her bag and carefully places them in front of each stone. The second lightning strikes near the circle. She briskly paces to the stone in the middle. Placing her hands on it, she breathes a sigh of relief and closes her eyes. Only one thought is occupying her mind now. It is time to change the course of time.

Instantly, her mind is flooded with images. The images of the past, present and future all happening at the same time. The onslaught is almost unbearable. She struggles to keep her composure. Now is not the time to lose concentration. She inhales and exhales trying to center herself. She focuses her mind on one single moment in the past. She has to warn him. She has failed, perhaps he won´t. She hopes he won´t. The third lightning strikes mere inches away from her. She tries to establish a mind connection. He is almost visible now. Using every ounce of her strength, she quickly gathers all her memories and tries to send them to him. He needs to know what will happen, if they don´t change, if people don´t change...She sends her last memory, then everything goes black and she collapses to the ground.

She slowly regains consciousness. She is lying on the wet ground. Distantly she can hear some birds singing. She can smell fresh air. It cannot be. It is not possible. She opens her eyes and stands up. She can see that the land has changed. Everything is starting to grow again. He made it...they made it. The future has been rewritten. Her task is done. Relief palpable in her eyes, she looks up. The sky is clear and the dawn is near. In the east the auburn sun is rising. Smiling softly, she vanishes into thin air.

The end.
