Katie’s steps crunched in the snow as she made her way to the cold iron gate that seemed untouched by human kind. She pulled the stone key out of her pocket and performed the routine of opening the gate. She was a professional, having done it so many times before. The gate didn’t even creak as she pushed it open.
The house towered over her as she continued making her way to the breathless steps. The only thing she noticed was the moon illuminating his window. The curtains were shut so she imagined what she wanted to see.
The innocent snow covered the stained frame of this past home and continued to fall around her form. She didn’t even notice the cold. She was to cold inside.
Because there was none left.
She sat on the steps and flashed back to all memories that she had had here. And then realized all the could- have- been memories that would never be.
“There’s nothing left,” She kept repeating to herself like a mantra. Telling her heart to forget the love and telling her body to feel nothing at all.
He wasn’t meant to go yet. The ring on her left hand told her so. She buried her head in her hands even though it was already dark with her head up. She struggled to hold her heart together as she cried the night away right there on the steps where he had last kissed her.
He would never walk up these steps again. He would never touch the handle to the front door again. Never would he stand at his window and wave to her as she stood below.
Never, never, never. She said to herself.
That’s what death did.
Katie shut the gate behind her and followed her prior footsteps home.
