Visitation

I saw the ghost of you tonight

Haunting my bed,

You crept into my dreams

Pulled me out,

Craving my attention -

You were a mass of glinting particles

Frozen in time and space,

Appearing every few seconds.

Swirling pockets

of diamond dust -

You gazed at me,

Through me,

Like a memory you wasn’t sure existed.

My own memories stirred:

I remember those sapphire eyes

Cold, precious metals

Those eyes -

I met you halfway

With my hands,

Cold from the lack of you -

A tendril of sliver sand crept over,

And rested atop my palm

-

For a second I believed I had touched you again

For a second I felt warm, your heartbeat kept mine company

For just a moment, I believed you were here, and I was home.

I opened my eyes

Those stones bored back inside my skull

No reflection -

I moved closer,

Held my lips to yours

Forcing my love into your shadow -

You didn’t react

But you felt it -

Because you did what you always do

When I love you

You ran away, into the night

-

Dust settled on the windowsill

The winter breeze called you home
