The legend on which Death's Winter and the other books in the series are based off of. 100% original.

Long ago, the king of Hell ruled his kingdom of the dead alone. Soon, the loneliness ate at his heart, and having no wife, created four sons from the darkest plauges he could muster.

The first son, Famine, would make the plants in his path wither and any food he touched would rot instantly. Even though he was the oldest and the first to cause chaos in the world of the living, he despised his dark gifts and tried escaping his brothers whenever he could, causing humans to starve wherever he went.

The second son was War. He would rile the men of the living world into a foaming frenzy, causing the loss of many lives and much bloodshed. War himself would join in the battle, drinking the crimson life of his enemies and forcing others to do so as well. He had no care for life and would kill as he pleased.

The third son, Pestilience, would bring sickness with his arrival. After being ravaged by Famine and War, humans were easy prey to his weakening touch. Humans would call him the Ghost of Disease since he himself was sickly pale. As terrible as Pestilence was, he was nothing compared to the youngest son.

The youngest son was Death. Being the final son, he ended the life of anyone he met. There was no remorse for the amount he killed, but there was always the loneliness in his heart, a loneliness his brothers could never banish.

As happy as the king was to have sons, he was disgusted with the chaos they created in the world of the living. After many, many years, a deal was struck between the king and Mother Earth. The four brothers were locked away, to be forever imprisoned in Tartarus behind the Gate of Seasons. Four keys were created and given to the four daughters of Mother Earth: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.

Part of the deal was the king would grant immortality upon the daughters and any of their future kin, so long as Mother Earth created immortal bodies for the sons so they could still roam the world of the living, at least spiritually.

When the demons of Hell found out that their four beloved princes were to be locked away for all eternity, they revolted. They hunted down the guardians and attempted to take the keys from them. At first the sons stopped the fighting, but eventually commanded the demons to find the keys. The daughters learned to hate the sons and the demons they commanded, taking their gifts to dark places.

One day, the daughters will fail in their mission. One day, the sons will be freed. That day will mark the start of the Apocalypse.
