Elizabeth's Letter

May 2th, 1832: Saturday in Poetry, Texas

Dear Grandpa,

It’s been almost six years since we have seen each other face to face. Everything seems to be in total chaos here at Poetry, Texas. Mama is very sick after having baby Louis so she hardly has anytime for me. And our dearest Papa is away at sea for a while.

The weather here is unbearable .It’s so hot that I have fainted many of times. Our steers get very thirsty because the water in the creeks are drying up. Some of the chickens died because of heat stroke! Poor Mama had to even go to the doctor! I pray that this heat will die down soon though especially for our sister Sarah who is with child!

Sarah the eldest of us child was married off to the widower Mr. Beard. She said his three kids Samuel, Precious, and Gloria are very disobedient. They are not very pretty kids either. Samuel at six is the oldest, he hasred hair that seems to always be dirty. Then Precious and Gloria are two and five both have dirt-blonde hair and faded blue eyes.

Oh and Laura our youngest sister is very intelligent. Her smile is very outshining which brightens up everyone’s day. Laura also is a very sick child and Dr. Hyde thinks she will not live to reach her sixteenth birthday. Which always make us poignant and we try to enjoy her every single day.

Well now the only one of us I have not mentioned about is Kale.Kale is now a hardy sixteen year old whom is in love with Mary Benson, the preacher’s daughter. Kale has grown to be about six foot man with a well built body. He I believe will be a great husband and father when he is older.

Now I need to get down to what I wrote to you for. As I have already stated it has been years since we saw each other. So I Elizabeth would love it if you would let me have the honors of staying at your house for a year or two so I could go to college down there. For as you know I have always wanted to be a nurse and I think this is the perfect time to go to school.

If you don’t mind please write me. It would mean so much! I would do whatever chores you wanted me to do and I would promise to help her new wife Molly with everything you want me to do. Well I guess it is time for me to close this wonderful letter with Love.

Love your Granddaughter,

Elizabeth Marie Pearl Bishop

P.S. I would also like to bring my cats Lily and Tiger. They are very sweet and I swear they will be no crisis with them because they’re so quite. Please say yes because I can’t possibly leave them behind. Well now good-bye and I hope to see you January, 1st!
