Dead in the Water

Quite. That’s what it’s like when your underwater. All you hear is the beat of your heart inside your ears. Feel nothing but the strain for a new breath, yearning..but you don’t take one. You sink down deeper, until you’re lying on the bottom of the lake. Lost. Forever. Not to rise again, and break the seal on the surface to the water, inhaling cool, clear air. For you are dead in the water. That’s what it was like for me anyway. It was night, I slipped out of my bedroom and outside into the chilly air. The moon shown down upon me, the stars twinkled gently. I sat on a bench by the lake in my silvery blue robe. Then I got up, slowly walking toward it. I put a bare foot to the edge of the drink, it felt cool against it. I stepped in more so it was up to my waist, then my chest, my neck. It was all above me now and I twisted in the water so the night sky was what I saw. The moon shook in the reflection of the water. I closed my eyes hearing my heart beat softly inside my head. My breathing slowed, it was no longer there. I opened my mouth and nose, letting the water in. Then I was sinking, sinking to the bottom of the lake. I gently landed, at the bottom. Reeds and seaweed entangled me, a pearl white rock held my head, the dark water caressed me; enveloping me like a blanket. I opened my eyes and stared up toward the moon, but I could no longer see it. I could no longer see. I could no longer feel the coldness of the water. For I was dead. Dead in the water.
