tWINKLE, A YOUNG GIRL WHO HATES A BOY. BUT THEN, SOMETHING HAPPENED WHICH MADE HER TO RE-THINK HER OPINION

It was a sunny morning when I took my favourite book from the shelf and began to read it. I have read it a thousand times already but I just could not get enough of it. I guess some books just go straight into your heart and make it their home. I remember the last time I read this book. It was 2 months ago. It feels like ages ago.

“Hey Twinks,” somebody called me. It was the same familiar voice which had been irritating me for the last few months now.

“Why has he come here?” I thought to myself.

“What are you doing?” He asked after entering the room.

“I am reading a book. Can’t you see?” I asked in an annoying tone.

“Oh! Leave it, come let us do something fun” he said

“No Amay. I am reading this book. Until I finish it, I am not going anywhere. So please stop disturbing me.”

“Ok Ok..you don’t have to shout. I am going. But I’ll return at 1. At that time, I am not going to hear any excuse.”

Thank god! He left. But the nuisance would come back at 1. And I knew that I would not be spared then.

Amay shifted to our building around two months ago. At first I was happy to see a new family shifting to our building. But later on, it came as a annoyance to me. Amay is probably the naughtiest boy I have ever seen in my life, sorry….the naughtiest boy I have ever seen in my life. In my childhood, I watched a television show called ‘Dennis The Menace’ in which Mr. Wilson kept getting disturbed by Dennis. I felt myself in place of Mr. Wilson. I wondered how his parents would suffer him. Sometimes, I felt sorry for them to raise such a little devil.

One day, he had a look at my videogame and asked me to give it to him for a few days. But when I refused, he just took this whole world in his head and started crying. It took a lot from his parents to get him out of my room that day. From that day onwards, I never kept my videogame in a macroscopic view.

He came at 1 as he promised without wasting any time. I wondered how a troublesome boy like him could be so punctual. But I guess some people wait eagerly for their chance to engage in their favourite hobby.

“What do you want boy?” I asked.

“Don’t worry. I just came to invite you for my birthday. You have to come this Sunday to my house. Ok?”

  I thought for a moment, “ok….I’ll come…”

He didn’t stay after that. I guess he didn’t come for anything else. Honestly speaking, I was a little surprised by this nice gesture from him. But I knew I wouldn’t go. Firstly, I didn’t know any of his friends there. Secondly, I knew he had some plan in his fishy mind to insult me in front of his friends. I didn’t want to be a pudding head in front of others.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

It was Sunday and as I planned , I didn’t go. I was expecting Amay to come to my apartment and compel me to come with him. But, thank god! Nothing like that happened. I guess he was in swing of his birthday bash and it didn’t matter to him if I be a part of it or not.

But then at evening, Mr and Mrs. Chandran came. (Amay’s parents) They were looking a little serious. I was wondering what was going on their minds.

“Twinkle, can we talk to you for a moment?” Mrs. Chandran requested

“Sure” I said, still in wonder.

They made themselves comfortable even without my offer.

“Its about Amay.”  She continued. “We know he disturbs you a lot. But I think there is something you should know about him.”

Hmmm….It was getting interesting. I guess I had to prepare myself for a surprise, for I did feel that something serious was there. I could judge it from their strained faces.

I nodded, but Mrs. Chandran was unable to speak out clearly. She looked at her husband who just held her hands as if he was saying- just say it.

“Amay has………………..Amay has……………leukemia.”

I felt as if my breath suddenly stopped. That one moment was a moment of sheer shock and utter despair. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

I recovered after a few seconds and found Mr. Chandran talking to me. Frankly I could not pay attention to half of the words that he was saying. But I could remember a few anyway.

“We just wanted to inform you that. The doctor told that he is not in danger so far and if treatment goes well, he will recover completely; but it has affected him deeply. He doesn’t want to believe that he is suffering from it. That conflict in mind actually causes this improper behavior of his.”

Now I was listening to him carefully.

“He was excited about his birthday party today. When you didn’t turn up, he was a bit sad and couldn’t enjoy the party the way he would have liked.  We just wanted to request you to please ignore his behavior , otherwise he would be more sad and it could affect his treatment. If something goes wrong…………………..”He was not able to cross the finishing line of that sentence and everyone would know why.

They left soon, but their words were not ready to leave my mind. I sat on my bed shell shocked. AMAY HAS LEAUKAMIA….Oh god! How did not register in my mind that something like this could be there? How could I never think that there is a sad story behind his freaky, funny, vivacious face? I halted for a moment and began picturing his face. For the first time, I was having a nice mental image of him rather that the normal one which I used to have. I felt myself like a evil lady devoid of any feelings towards others. I considered myself guilty for not attending his party and also for ignoring him all these days. All my feelings towards him took a big upside down within the space of thirty minutes.

Amay was reading something when I entered his room the next day. Seeing him I smiled but in return I got an amusing frown. I clearly understood he was not angry with me, he just wanted to show he was. Still, I owed him an apology.

“Sorry” I said. “I was busy yesterday.”

“You were not. I know that. Don’t make a fool of me.” He said

“Ok ok…I was not busy…but I m sorry…really”

I saw a mild smile in his face and that was enough for me.

“Even though, I didn’t come, I got a gift for you.” I said and presented the small box which I had kept in my hand.

He opened the box excitedly and was even more excited after what he saw inside. It was the videogame that he wanted so much. His smile grew and I was happy that I was the reason for it.

“But…” he said but with a little doubt “it’s not the same……….”

“I bought a new one for you…you deserve a new one my dear.”

He became so excited that he hugged me. His lovely hug was better than any thank you and I felt myself at the top of the world.

I hope our relationship continues the same way; but mostly, I would love to see him perfectly free from what he has now.

There are lots of Amays in this world who are actually going through this phase. The world should understand them and stress on lending a helping hand to them rather than avoiding them. Their improper behavior should be considered as a part of their lives and they would be better served if they would be confronted.

A little adjustment from our side can save their life…
