Created on a foundation of war,
From across the seas, we tore and tore,

Teas overboard and midnight rides,
When the Redcoats came, we didn't hide,

Parchment papers and chicken-scratch print,
Starting an independence fire with rebel flint,

A green staue in our harbor,
Celebrate days of Labor, Veteran, and Arbor,

When the wolves were at our door, we fought,
And when our children needed guidance, we taught,

When we sinned with the horror of slavery,
We fought for abolition bravely,

When the hatred of a race tortured others,
We stood up and defended the broken like brothers,

When colors were separated in all matters of ways,
A King stepped up, chased the hate away,

When towers were attacked, and we needed help,
There were our troops, our police, with a single yelp,

When that place of learning was attacked by a man,
We mourned and cried, thankful for our safety plans,

When that marathon exploded in a mass of terrorist hate,
The vengeance we took, for the criminals it wasn't great,

Because we are America, the land of immigrants,
Of Catholics, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Protestants,

Because we are America, the land of hope,
Through tragedy, we band together and cope,

Because we are America, home of the free,
And there's no other place I'd rather be.
