It started with another girl and it looked like it would end because of another girl. Karma’s a bitch they say, and it was coming after her in spades. As she sat awake at 3 am thinking, her stomach churning, a bitterness in her mouth she could not get rid of, she thought yes karma is a bitch.

When she first met Nick, he seemed a bit of a lost soul and this automatically attracted her, she was not sexually attracted to him, he just fascinated her, like a meandering butterfly can hold your attention, he held hers because she wasn’t sure about him, he was an enigma. She talked to him to try to get a feel of who he was but he surprised her. He was not consistent and this thrilled her. It thrilled her because on this night she finally found something she had been looking for for 7 years - 7 years was the last time she met a human conundrum and it turned out he wasn’t such a conundrum, she was just really bored. Nick however was a contradiction in terms. He was humble and yet not. He was quiet and yet not. He was slow (not stupid) and yet not. He fascinated her. They got to talking after the First night and she thought she’d finally met someone who would understand her because he seemed to be fighting for the same thing, fighting to maintain individual uniqueness in a completely social community. She thought they were a pair, social outcasts, misunderstood and not cared for by family and friends, she thought they were incredibly lucky to find each other. As she did not believe in soul mates it would be unfair to pass this off as a case of such, and yet there you are she believed they were two of a very rare kind.

He had a girlfriend who was his opposite in almost every way- not in a good way. As such it was only a matter of time before she and nick took their friendship a step further, as two people who connect tend to do. He complained about his relationship and she listened and thought she understood because she thought he was looking for what she was looking for, only he was having trouble finding it. It never actually occurred to her at that point that what he was looking for may be found in her, all she wanted to do is find mental peace with him, which she did and she ignored the moral implications of her actions because lets face it, if you are that hungry you will steal and eat without a second thought then feel bad about it later. This is human nature. And eat she did until she discovered she did not want to steal anymore, she wanted her own kitchen. Fights ensued as is normal between two people who are trying to find a way to be together without knowing it and it was a dark time. Long periods of silence ensued but still they ended up together because they had a THING between them.

Finally it happened, they were free to be with each other and with each other they were. At first it was wonderful. The honeymoon period of two people who have fought to be together is a sight to behold and if you have never had that you must at least once in your life find it because it is heaven. Happiness and goodwill among men seemed within reach, so great was her joy. Finally she could be herself with Nick because he understood her, he was her equal and he knew her well enough to help her fight her demons and she would help him fight his and together they would be invincible. And then the honeymoon period ended.

It ended and she realized they were not on the same plane anymore, that there was a gap. When she tried to talk to him about it, he brushed it off as a phase but it scared her. It scared her because she knew gaps increase when neglected, like a tear in pantyhose, they can be unstoppable and she was not ready to give that up. Enter Ashley. Ashley was Nick’s friend during the Gap and there was no reasoning with her. She was convinced she was about to lose Nick just as his ex lost him to her. A Fight ensued that lasted weeks and at the end he agreed to give her up and for a while things where ok. Then another Gap came. This happened all within the space of a year. Ashley’s head arose again and this time, he refused to understand her fear. He’s moved on from the contradictions in personality, had found his place in the world and had left her standing on the outside looking in. in her mind Ashley was tied to this and no matter how much she pleaded with him, he would not understand, he did not want to understand, he refused to hear and turned his back on her. He refused to end the relationship with her because he said he loved her. She refused to end the relationship because she loved him. So she stayed in the relationship miserable and lonely as he went about being whole, being a part of something and she was left broken, damaged, dark and twisted. She could blame Ashley though that was just a catalyst. She could blame Nick but really was it his fault he grew up? So she blamed herself and stayed awake all night long alone and in the cold.
