A little short story based on a character I created years ago. I might make more shorts involving Charlie- I've grown to love him as my creation!

“Into the Darkness”

His uneven footsteps echoed through the night. Above him countless stars shone with a faint glimmer, beckoning him on. Charlie’s boots crunched on the snow with each step. His hot, heavy breath could be seen flowing out of him plain as day. Every now and then he stopped to listen, straining his pathetic human ears with the hope of some kind of sign leaping out at him. He had lost track of everything. How far had he gone? How long had it been? He was exhausted, but he couldn’t afford to stop and rest, for the gripping fear of falling asleep in the middle of this frozen nowhere. There was no turning back; he just had to find his lost companion.

Just as his legs began to ache, he caught a change of scenery in the distance. Up ahead, dug out of the side of one of the mountains, was a snow cave. Picking up strength, he quickened his pace towards the first sign of hope. The opening was almost too small; it hadn’t been used by people in days. Squeezing inside, Charlie called out. No response. Was Haru not in here after all? Had he run too far and been swallowed up by the snow? He was still young, but Charlie refused to believe that Haru’s instincts wouldn’t lead him to safety. Perhaps he was still angry, not wanting to be found. After all, he wasn’t yet able to fully connect with Charlie’s feelings yet. He wouldn’t understand how worried he was. The rebounds of his voice had informed Charlie that the cave was deeper than it looked, so he crawled on, into the darkness…

It wasn’t long before he was no longer able to see his own hand in front of his face. With his most precious sense, his sight, cut off, fear seized him. Charlie’s heart began to beat ferociously, so much so that he could even hear it echoing within himself. Naturally, darkness was an unknown to Charlie. He had always been afraid of it. He had been born within the fire clan, where it was always bright. With his home no more, kind strangers of the snow mountain clan- who lived far north in a place plagued by a never-ending winter took him in. Inside him every ounce of his being was screaming, rejecting the cold, dark, unnatural world he had been forced into. He had already spent half of his life living up here, but never in such harsh conditions. He had thought he was used to it by now, but nothing can change in-built natural instinct. The roof of the cave lowered, until he found himself sliding along on his belly. It occurred to him that perhaps it wasn’t a person that dug out this cave after all. Charlie clung to the assumption that it was Haru himself, but the agonising thought that it had been forged by some other creature tug at the back of his mind. Charlie began to feel himself giving in. Exhaustion swept away his fear, and his heart slowed. His limbs no longer ached, as they had become numb. Slowing almost to a stop, he felt his eyelids get heavier and heavier. Suddenly, he felt his mind begin to slip away…

Something sank its sharp teeth into his fingers, piercing his mitten. The shock woke him instantly with a jolt that had him strike his head on the roof of the cave. The creature gave a concerned whine. Charlie removed the mitten and his bloody fingers were soon met by a warm, caring tongue, swiftly licking them clean. With his good hand, he reached through the dark and touched the small, lively mound of fur. He already knew, but the feel of  that tiny, wolf-like body assured Charlie that he was indeed being greeted by his own Siberian Husky pup, Haru. Relief washed over him as a little wet nose met his own. Haru gave a sharp bark and began padding slowly forward. Charlie followed, and the two continued into the darkness together.
