Short story for The Novelist. Based off the song "Cell Block Tango."

"I would like to call Rose Campbelle to the stand." my attorney said.

I could feel the eyes in the court room follow me to the witness stand. Their eyes burned my soul with their judgement. I just wish they would take their eyes off of me.

The bailiff made me raise my hand and he stated "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"

"I do." I put my hand down and walked over to the witness stand and sat down.

"Rose, what happened the night when Mitchel Yorrow was murdered?" my attorney asked me.

"It was a cold winter night. I saw snowflake after snowflake fall from the sky. I felt something furry rubbing up against my fishnet tights. I started to talk to the cat. I noticed it had a collar. I look at the name tag and noticed the cat's name is Qali. I started to wonder who would even name a cat that. The cat was so fluffy. I just grabbed it and I snuggled the cat up against my cold body." I stated.

The other attorney stood up and said "Objection. Your honor, I don't understand what this has to do with anything."

The judge looked at me as if he was giving me permisson to tell why I am saying this.

"I am telling you this because this is the start of the story. It will get better." I said. "Where was I? Oh yes, I hear a man call the cat's name. 'Qail!' then I see a man running up to me. He started to tell me this was his cat. I handed him the cat. Then he started to ask why I was on a street corner on a cold winter night. I started to tell him I was a hooker. He found that interesting. I told him it is legal in the city limits of Las Vegas. He asked me what my rate was. I told him fifteen bucks half a hour. I knew I had him in the palm of my hands. I take him to the darkest alley I could find. We had sex in this dark, nasty, stinky alley. When we were finished I asked him for the fourty five dollars he owed me. Then he pulled a knife on me. I was so scared I had no clue what to do but cry. I fall to my knees and start to bawl. I tell him that he doesn't have to pay me as long as he doesn't kill me. I could feel the tears freezing to my face."

My attorney then asked "Then what happened?"

"I followed him. He got in his fancy car and drove away. Right after he got in his I got in mine. I drove for miles trying to see where he was going to stop. He didn't even know that I was following him. After what seemed like hours he finally stopped at a house. I assumed it was his. I waited for him to get inside. I slip out of my beat up car and slip inside his house. Right as I entered the house I took off my eight inch stilettos. I did not want to be caught by making a lot of noise. I noticed the kitchen. I stopped in his kitchen to grab a weapon. All I could find was a frying pan. So, I took the frying pan searching for the prick that didn't pay me. I snuck up stairs and I found him in his bedroom half naked. I slowly open the door. I tiptoed behind him and I swung the frying pan towards his head. After I did that his body hit the floor. He blacked out for a few minutes. I smiled and wait for him to wake up. He did. He turned over and saw me. He rubbed his eyes really hard. 'You?' he said. 'It is me. You thought you would get away without paying me?' I swung the frying pan at his naked crotch. He howled like a dog that just got kicked. 'You like that? You want some more?' I watched him as he coughed up some blood. 'Oh, poor baby.' I found a vase full of flowers and water. I poured the water in his mouth. After he got the blood out I kissed him oh so gently. He thought he was getting away with it. I started slamming the frying pan into his head. Again and again. Blood splattering everywhere. After the fifteenth smashing I stopped. I knew he was dead. I tried to find the bathroom. Once I did I stripped my clothes off and hopped into his shower. Trying to get the blood off of me. After I took a shower I went through his closet and put some of his clothes on. I put on a t-shirt and some sweats. I ran to my beat up car and drove away."

I could see the shock on everyone's face. "So, you are telling me Rose that you did it out of self defense and spitefulness?" My attorney asked.

"Yes. I killed him out of self defense and spitefulness. But mostly spitefulness."

"No futher questions." My attorney said.

The other attorney stands up and walks over to me. "Can you tell me what was going through your mind when he pulled a knife on you?"

"Sure. I thought 'What the hell? Why is this guy have sex with me and threaten to kill me so he did not have to pay me? I have children to provide for.'" I could feel the tears falling from my face. "'What is going to happen to my children if I die? What kind of life are they going to have?'"

"So, you believe you should not have had a knife pulled on you?"

"No. I don't think anyone should."

"Not even for low life like you?"

"I might be trashy because being a prostitute is my job. But do not call me a low life. I do what I have to do to provide for my kids. Do you think I want to be a call girl? In the future my kids go to school and someone asks 'What does your mom do for a living?' and they have to respond with she has sex for money? Because I don't. I want them to be proud of me. I don't want them ashamed of me. But right now that is all I can do to provide for my kids."

"Fair enough. No more questions."

A few days later

"Jury what is your verdict?" the judge asked.

"We, the jury, find Rose Campbelle not guilty under the charge of first degree murder under the reason of self defense."

I never felt happier. I know what I did was wrong. I need the money though. I think my final speech is what gave the jury the idea that I didn't do it for the wrong reason. I did it to feed and provide for the lives that I created. I am a mother and I need to do what I have to do.

The Novelist

it was a nice story. i like the way you write. but it didn't really seem like she did it out of self defense. he pulled the knife on her then drove away. then she followed him and killed him. she could have just gone home and not too much harm would be done. she could of called the cops. i'm not trying to be mean or anything it just seems you haven't got much research on this. again fine piece of writing, though.

What I did is I made most of the jury members women that have had children. She said she mostly did it out of revenge because this is the only way she can provide for her children. If you give people a sob story most of the time they will let you off the hook. Like the OJ Simpson case or the Casey Anothy case.
