“I’m pregnant.” I sobbed, as I sat at the kitchen counter. My mom and dad, standing across from me keep opening and closing their mouths before my dad speaks, “You have 2 weeks to get out of this house. Then I don’t want you to ever come back. You and Ben could’ve had a great life, but you went and screwed that up. We don’t want anything to do with you.” He finished, and the two walked out together.

But that was five years ago. I haven’t talked to either of my parents or Ben since I told them I was pregnant. It’s so hard to see Charlie every day because he looks just like Ben, but he’s the only thing that’s kept me going for the last five years. “Mom what’s wrong?” Charlie asked with his cute smile that melts my heart every time I see it.

“Oh nothing baby, are you going to be good for Julia tonight? I should be home pretty early. We’re not staying out too late.” I smiled back at him and ruffled his hair, winning me a groan from him.

He nodded hesitantly, before saying, “I’ll be good. Can Alex read me a story before bed?”

“Maybe, I’ll ask him.” I answer, and wander into the kitchen. Alex should be here any minute, it’s our 4th date, and I introduced him to Charlie on the 3rd. I guess he still likes me even though I’m a single mom considering he asked for another date. Alex and I met at a coffee shop about a month ago, and we instantly clicked. Charlie loves him, and Alex took an instant liking to Charlie as well. Charlie does need a dad. I involve him in sports and such, but that doesn’t replace the fact that he needs a dad. After Ben left, I never thought we’d make it, but we did. I tried calling Ben right after I had Charlie, but the next day his mom called me back and told me to never contact him again.

I haven’t tried since.

A knock on the door startled me, and when I heard Charlie opening the door, I could help but stomp into the living room and glare at him. “Charles Benjamin, what have I told you about opening the door by yourself? Do I need to take away that video game for a week or two?” I asked him sternly and his face dropped.

“I’m sorry! Please don’t take my game away!” He begged, so I couldn’t help but smile at him. “Ok, just remember what I said ok?” I asked him and he nodded back with his small smile playing on his lips. Rolling my eyes, it took all I have not to say, ‘you look just like your father’. I wish Ben was here to see Charlie, but he chose not too be in our life.

It’s his loss.

“Well, let’s go. I just have to drop Charlie off at the neighbors. You can meet me downstairs if you want,” I offered but Alex shook his head and held the door open for Charlie and I. What a gentleman.

We dropped Charlie off, and chatted about pointless things until we got to the restaurant.
