I grasped you
I clasped you
Though you were fleeting and soon gone.
You’re love was not
Mine to learn
Yet you were there to teach.
I saw you clearly
I touched your face
And then awoke from my dream.
My muscles ached
My eyes cried
Your scent still lingered on my lips.
I glanced over
And saw you’d gone
leaving your place still warm.
I shut my eyes in hopes of sleep
To see you again,
If only imagined briefly.
I found the note you left for me
Upon my kitchen table.
I read it only one long time
and watched it motionlessly taunt me.
Never was the air so cold,
Never “Lucky Charms” more bitter.
The magic was gone from the flavor,
The magic was gone from every heart beat.
Spirited away by your own device,
Ripped from me by your own will.
You left me no trace
Of your presence.
You left me no trace
Of your love.
I must wonder if either existed.
Did I clutch you?
Did I kiss you?
Did I stroke your hair?
Was it you who whispered to me
Those pretty words of passion?
“Silly little thought”,
I told my heart,
“you poor thing, you’re so confused.
You shouldn’t do that,
I shouldn’t let you,
You knew what was to come”.
And so you left,
And so I forgot,
And so my heart lamented.
Every pulse is a constant requiem
Of my love to the invisible woman.
