We all have our methods of keeping ourselves alive. His? His was that smoke that floated gracefully from his mouth.

He brought the cigarette to his mouth again. Breathe in. And out. And with the smoke, drifted away the last of his enthusiasm. The last of his optimism. He sighed, the breath shifting the smoke before it disappeared into the cold night air.

He used to be able to last without them. Back when he knew why he was alive, before he lost his way into cigarettes and alcohol, depression stealing the last of his happiness. And now he was here, the tar in his lungs and the weight in his heart. 

He knew it would kill him one day.

And when one day comes, maybe he'd've made something of himself. Got a partner, found a job, maybe even had a family...that's when the cigarettes would take him, like they had stolen many before him.

The silver spirit of his ever-present depression left his mouth once more, the light on the end of the cigarette being the only one in his life. And he walked away into the night. Alone.
