Summary

This is something I wrote back at Governor's School, age 17. We were told to write a letter to ourselves, as if we had lost all of our memory. What did we want our new life's foundations to be built on? What did we want our new self to carry on from the former life?

I found it this morning, and the memory made me smile.

Self,

The slate has been wiped clean, but don’t fret. Life and your views of perception have until this point been based strictly on your life experiences, the ways in which you were brought up. You can make decisions based upon nothing, because you know nothing. There are no limits.

But maybe this new self you are and represent to those who know and love you decides that it wants a starting point, a small but firm rock to stand on amidst the thrashing waves of unknowing. And if that is the case, because in your momentary state of no memory, these are some of the values and things that were important in life to me, because I no longer exist.

The world around me and the thought that no one else would truly ever fully understand or know me was something of great awe. I had an ear for music, such that a certain piece could move me far beyond normal emotional expectations. I could embrace every note and hear it as my own. I could sing…

Not that my singing was beautiful, but it was something that I always had to keep me company. I would hope that you too would one day step up to reclaim that voice and in it find a true friend, however seemingly unsteady or prone to wandering at the first sign of a cold it might be.

Know that I had no favorite color, but that I found the good in them all, although an orange 67’ Camaro with white racing stripes always seemed right to me.

But now that you know these things, you will forever be reminded and no matter if you don’t share my taste for them, your reactions and thoughts will always linger there.

Sincerely,
Your Former Self
